All offices are 30 days prior, a few are as long as 45, best you check with your office to confirm, unless it is less than 30 days that you want to apply.

Nope, extension would only be until passport expiry. The wife could apply abroad for a new Non-O, but for now she would be easiest to border bounce.

As for your wife, all I can think of is a quick border bounce to get a 60 day exempt.

There is no short term extension available to you. You could apply for your yearly extension and that would be valid until your current passport expiry.
