Coming across more than a few establishments that do not accept credit cards. Only PromptPay and Other Apps like that. But what ones can foreigners actually use?

TLDR : Answer Summary
In Thailand, many establishments prefer using local payment methods like PromptPay or other apps, often leading to a lack of credit card acceptance. Foreigners can utilize apps such as TrueMoney or Moreta, but these often hinge on business QR codes rather than personal ones. Wise is another option for some, allowing transfers and cash withdrawals with certain limitations. Cash remains a widely accepted method, with recommendations to withdraw larger amounts from ATMs to minimize fees. It's essential for foreigners to stay informed about which payment solutions work best and under what conditions.

Just use the atm and withdraw a considerable amound each time. I get the atm fee hurts but it’s not THAAAAT much.

alternatively you can use TrueMoney or Moreta

While I use an international card with no surcharge on payments, there is still no perfect solution for scanning QR Codes.

Example:

Tag Thai: Besides the fact that it doesn't permit payments to Personal QR Codes and only to registered businesses, the exchange rate offered is 1-1.5% lower and the minimum amount to be loaded per transaction is 100,000 THB with a restriction on cash withdrawal of max 10,000 THB per day. All in all, commissions are a deal breaker.

Similar commission related issues with others.

Take bigger amounts out of ATMs, 30k baht at a time, to reduce the impact of charges and pay cash for everything

There is a service that allows foreigners to deposit money into an scan app.. I forget what it's called, but I never tried because of the high per use cost..

Just use cash, if they don't accept cash, go nextdoor with your money.

I use Wise. I transfer to my gf who withdraw for me the cash and or she pays the bills for me when I need. I can use my wise card in Big C, DIY, and many other places, but usually has 200 baht minimum. The other places I pay in cash. I am ok. Sabay Sabay (in Thai). No worries.

You'll need to be aware that there is a difference between business QR codes and personal QR codes. Many small businesses, including many restaurants and almost all street vendors, use personal QR codes to pay into the owner's personal bank account. Almost all the solutions that tourists can use to access the QR code payment system, such as Tag Thai, only work with business QR codes. Moreta has started allowing payment to personal codes but charges a few percent surcharge.

Interesting re. Moreta. Has that ability to pay to personal codes just happened, and is it automatically available without me having to do anything? I ask because when I click "pay" in the app, the usual banner shows at the bottom saying that it can't be used for Thai personal codes.

yes but I believe DTV holders don't qualify for True Money's full account tier which is necessary to use the Promptpay feature. Otherwise you are limited to the relatively few merchants that accept True Money as a payment method, directly rather than the Promptpay feature of the True Money app.

I think you mean Tag Thai, and no, it's not great as you can only top it up in foreign currencies at Kasikorn exchanges, and suffer the currency conversion loss. It also doesn't work with personal QR codes which most smaller businesses use.

Anonymous participant 756 actually once you have a relationship with a local that can become a payments solution since they can have a local bank account which can pay locally and DTV holders cannot 😉
