TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, foreigners holding a pink ID card and yellow book still need to comply with the TM30 registration requirement, which involves notifying the immigration office about their residence every time they change their address or stay with a different landlord. The responsibility for the TM30 registration is primarily on the landlord, but if the foreigner is registered as the owner of the property (with a yellow book), they can also complete it themselves. The TM47 form is related to the 90-day reporting requirement, which also applies.
90 DAY REPORTING RESOURCES / SERVICES
  • Use the trusted Thailand 90 Day Reporting Serviceto get your in-person report done and mailed to you for as low as 375 THB (even if the online system doesn't work for you).
  • For immediate assistance, contact Thai Visa Centre directly via LINE at @ThaiVisaCentre or Email them.
  • Join the Thai Visa Advice Facebook Group to ask your questions, and get advice from others.

🛡️ Why bother with the Yellow House Book & Pink ID Card? Here are the benefits!

Many people wonder if it's worth the effort to obtain the Yellow House Book (Tabien Baan) and the Pink ID Card while living in Thailand on a 1-year extension. Here is a quick summary of how it makes life easier:

✅ Skip the trips to Immigration: The biggest advantage! With the yellow book, you don't need to visit Immigration and pay for a "Certificate of Residence" every time you buy/sell a car or motorcycle, or renew your driver's license. The book serves as your permanent proof of address.

✅ Bank Requirements: Many banks have tightened their regulations. Today, several banks actually require a yellow house book to open a new account or even to make certain changes to your existing banking services. Without it, you might hit a dead end.

✅ Easy Identification: The pink card is an official Thai ID document. You can use it to check in for domestic flights, at hotels, and at police checkpoints without having to carry your passport everywhere (which is better kept safe in a vault).

✅ Save Money: At national parks, museums, and various attractions, showing your pink card often allows you to pay the "Thai price" instead of the much higher tourist price. It pays for itself quickly!

✅ Simplified Contracts: Signing up for home internet or utility bills in your own name becomes much easier. You are registered in the system with your unique 13-digit ID number, just like Thai citizens.

✅ Smoother Healthcare: Public hospitals use your ID number to consolidate your medical history. This simplifies the registration process and ensures you are treated more like a resident than a temporary tourist.

In short: While not an absolute requirement, if you plan on staying for a while and own a vehicle or property, it saves time, money, and a lot of frustration in the long run!

Sorry my friend, but in the last ten years of having a Yellow House Book And Pink 🆔 it has NEVER been accepted for ANYTHING .... Full Stop.

All because different officials make up their own rules. And sadly that's NEVER going to change.

With respect.

Public Services: The pink ID card contains your Thai identification number (13 digits), which may be required for more advanced services within Thai administration that the driving license does not cover.

Proof of Address: The driving license is rarely accepted as an official proof of address by authorities. If you are going to buy a new motorcycle, sell a car, or handle matters at Immigration, the yellow house book (or a residency certificate from Immigration/the embassy) is usually required.

it's not a terrible comment. It's an accurate comment. Many DLT will not accept a yellow book. No bank REQUIRES a yellow book. A residence certificate works just fine. Many hotels will no longer accept anything besides passport to check-in a foreigner due to the TM30 requirement.

All of these things have been widely reported across multiple places online.

You can do as you wish but it can make things easier in many cases. If you don't want it, it's up to you. I've used it a few times myself and even got cheaper prices because of it. It doesn't make it any worse to have it.

Related to all this, from 30,000 feet.

My colleague (I am a former IBM) was a technical leader for this Immigration Optimisation. Took them 5 years to get where they are now and what we see from the Thai Immigration site.

The idea was and is, keep the foreigners on a short leash. That will never change, he said.

Yellow book, I have owned a condo in Bangkok since 2008. No any books, the City Council said the property is empty, nobody lives in there.

Living in Japan, our daughter got into the Blue Book in a province. I got into their Yellow Book.

But, But, only after my wife got terminally ill, cancer (in Japan) and I looked after her for years in hospital. It ended well.

Only then her family decided I am a person worth getting into their family home, Yellow Book.

My wife was telling me, her family did not trust a foreigner (hardly any family in the provinces does) until then.

Me, as a foreigner, could possibly claim ownership or whatever on their property. Then they dropped those worries and accepted me with open arms. Saved their daughter.

There was no need, had never been for me, we got the Blue Book and Yellow book for our Bangkok condo, disengaged from their provincial City Council.

My wife and our Thai daughter are getting invitations for elections at our Bangkok address.

We do not live there full time but still.

Alexander Groos In some quarters, it does. Like having or not having a Thai passport. Thais with their Blue Book do not have to have Thai passport, ever, most do not have it. That is all they ever need (Thai ID is issued based on Ble Book). Only when travelling abroad.

Simon Roberts The TM30 duty will always remain on the landlord or the property manager. You can register the accommodation in the TM30 system with a yellow housebook number, though, this is true. You could however also ask the landlord for the Login-ID and the password, then you would be able to register yourself in the online TM30 system

Yellow book can be use when buying a car or motorbike instead of a certificate of residency...

Pink ID can be used in Hotels instead of your passport.

Then you will not need to reregister yourself when coming back to your residence...

a yellow housebook is the substitute for a "certificate of residence" from Immigration. You would need it for getting a bank account opened, register a vehicle, for the extension of your Thai drivers license, et cetera. A yellow housebook saves you the journey to your Immigration office. A pink ID-card can be used for domestic flights or for hospital visits

use it instead of having to get a resident certificate for opening a bank account, Thai drivers license, etc. Phuket immigration is now charging ฿1,000 for a resident certificate.

I used my pink card when getting a Thai driver license. The number is referenced on the license. Also can be used for internal air travel in lieu of passport. Might get you into some attractions for Thai price if you're lucky.

you can use your yellow book for anything that requires a certificate of residency for example renewing your driving licence, buying a car, bank stuff like getting a loan or credit card, etc.

Pink cards are less useful. I can use my pink ID number instead of my passport number for hotels, hospitals and banks, etc but still need my passport to open/get on the system initially.
