If l get the 90 day retirement O visa in UK, use it to open bank account but don’t apply for one year extension and leave before 90 days. Can one do that and is it acceptable to immigration?
Answer summary
Yes, it is generally possible to open a bank account in Thailand with a 90-day Non-O retirement visa without applying for a one-year extension, as long as you provide necessary documentation such as a Thai phone number and proof of address. However, if you do not extend your visa and leave before the 90 days, there’s a risk that your bank account may be frozen or closed due to inactivity, especially if it's not being used frequently. Immigration usually does not scrutinize the status of your bank account under these conditions, but it's crucial to remain aware of potential bank policies regarding account usage.

Yes you can obtain a 90 day Non-O visa in your country and once you get to Thailand you go to a bank and open an account.
You generally need 3 things, the Non-O stamp, a Thai telephone number and some paperwork for proof of address.
If you do not apply for an extension to that visa it makes no difference to that bank account. The bank will not close it especially if you are sending money to it and don’t let it sit idle and are coming back to Thailand within a year.
The bank doesn’t check to see if you get the extension to your original Non-O or not.
All these people saying the bank account might be closed are talking rubbish.
The 90 day Non O is issued to you on the basis that you intend to have a 90 day holiday, it was issued on the prerequisite that you are a ‘retiree’ with 800,000 baht equivalent in your bank account. The visa isn’t and never will be a ‘retirement’ visa, it’s always a 90 day Non O, that can be extended by 12 months at the immigration officers ‘discretion’. When the Embassy issue the Non O there is no requirement that you need to extend for another 12 months.
Terry Bill McGinty well the embassy at a certan point won't give him another 90 days Non-O visa when it becomes apparent that he is misusing it for consecutive stays in Thailand. NO, this is not how it works
Nongnuch Kamdee I visit Thailand four times a year two three weeks at a time, they lay out red carpet for genuine tourists like me. I am not misusing anything. I will be back in Thailand for Songkran after spending new years there and red carpet will be there again.
I doubt immigration will care, however your bank may if there are long periods of inactivity on your account they may freeze your account or cancel it.
The bank only wants to see the Non-O stamp in your passport, Thai telephone and proof of some sort of address to open the account.
Once you open the account you will never have to go into the bank again unless you change your telephone number or address and passport but these days nearly all of that can be done online.
They don’t check to see if you got an extension or how much time you live in Thailand.
John Nielson not necessarily, but it certainly is a potential risk. I would be asking why the OP wants a bank account if they are not extending their stay Convenience perhaps, but not essential.
Sure you can do it. But if your intention is to then use that account while on later tourist entries you may well find that it gets frozen at some point. If you are honest with the bank they are unlikely to open an account for you
I visit Thailand regularly, 2 sometimes 3 weeks at a time, bank account will be great help, it will cut out the ATM charges also my own banks charges. I am not trying to buck the system.
Abey Abey u dont have to retire to hold on to the nonO retirement visa....many get 1yr extensions but they probably only stay 3mths(winter) of the year in thailand
l have been doing that last few years, as you know Wise only allows £200 cash withdrawals per month plus local ATM charges, over the year it adds up, and bank account will stop me carrying large amounts is cash from UK to Thailand.
Abey Abey you do not need any visa if you only visit three or four times within a one-year period, and only stay 3-4 weeks each time. No problem as long as you can show the famous three proofs on each entry. You can enter visa exempt, it is absolutely no problem if you stay under a 150 days total stay within a 1-year period - you would be considered being a real tourist on such an entry pattern. But you cannot get a bank account opened on a visa-exemption. You would have to rely on your credit cards or on whatever cash you bring with you and exchange at the Superrich money changer in the BKK airport basement
Sean Franjesh the rate of the Ratchadamri Superrich and the one at the BKK airport are almost identical, the difference is 0.05 THB. In case you need to spend money for a taxi to the SR headquarter, the airport is the better choice because that's where you arrive anyways
If you have a bank account and do not have a long stay visa then the bank could ask you to close the account. If you have the account and you never have to interact with the bank and they never ask about your visa then you will probably be able to continue to have an account.
I doubt that there is some master AI driven program trying to discern who is doing what you suggest. Just be aware that the account could be frozen or closed if you don't have a current valid long stay visa.
Graham Seal As long as he has a valid O visa the is OK. It expires in 90 days. As long as he doesn’t have a valid long stay visa then the bank could freeze his account if they somehow discover that he is without a visa.
Graham Seal The non o is for a maximum stay of 90 days. There is nowhere that is written that you need extend for 1 year, and there is nowhere that says you cannot have multiple non o visas, that i am aware of.
I have done that currently on my third none o visa. In 18 months. No problem at immigration, or from my Thai bank. I am applying for the 12 month extension this time.
as long as you don't do this consecutively more than 2 times every rolling 1-year period (it would mean a "misuse" of the Non-Imm-O visa for a longstay in Thailand) it is okay
Abey Abey so your sole reason for getting the 90 day non O is to open a bank account because that would help, and not because you want to stay in Thailand any length of time. If you consider the cost and hassle involved to acquire the 90 day visa, is having a Thai bank account actually needed seeing as you only intended to visit Thailand on short trips, surely visa exemption stamps would suffice?
Terry Bill McGinty I visit Thailand four times a year, spent new years there, back again for Songkran if flights don’t get cancelled. Having a bank account will help greatly.

Abey Abey you won't be able to get a bank account opened on a tourisitic visa. You need a Non-Imm-visaclass, a Thai mobile number linked to your passport and name, and a certificate of residence from Immigration or a longterm rental contract. A 90-days single entry Non-Imm-O Retirement Visa would be a good start to get a bank account opened, and you should still consider to apply for the 12-months extension as this, a multi re-entry permit included, will enable you to exit an re-enter Thailand as many times as you want, without having to apply for an e-visa ever again
Abey Abey eventually you’ll have to show your sim is registered to you and they’ll want to update your information so no long stay visa to show they’ll close it
