You should mention what country passport is it, as each country might have different procedures. In my case, my Embassy would immediately void (and literally cut) the passport once you start a new passport application, be it because it has no pages or because it's expiring soon, so you become temporarily passportless until they get you the new one. For my country that normally takes 5-10 business days.
Having the account is relevant, not because it changes your status, but because it's easier for tracing, so the Government can know easier if you brought money or not. True that even money brought on a mule would need to pay taxes (under some circumstances), but how would even they know you brought it? If transferred to a bank account on your name, then it's easier to track, and ask taxes.
people "like him" is actually a visa expert that possible has been in Thailand for more than 16 years, and is well versed on visa matters. But why bother to ask here if you won't listen anyways.
