you use your own bank account in the USA as long as you have the equivalent of 800k baht in USA dollars or 65k baht monthly equivalent. You only need the thai account for your extension if you apply before you arrive for your non O visa

Why don't you just apply for your non O over 50 retirement visa in the USA before you travel? You will then get a 90 day stamp when you arrive and with this visa you will be able to open a bank account and start the process for your extension? Much simpler and easier for you

you don't need a flight out if you apply for a non O retirement visa before you arrive. It's very simple to do especially when you are in your own home with time to fill it in. Your new life in thailand will start much easier having the non O sorted before you arrive

When my girlfriend came across last year I wrote a letter guaranteeing her stay so she didn't need any money in her own account

I don't understand why you would want the hassle of doing it last minute in the immigration line? I will take you 10mins to fill in before you arrive then easy when you land

visa exempt is as it says you are allowed to enter the country without any visa. It's not a visa at all that's why it's called visa exempt. This applies to a number of countries that get this visa exempt when the enter thailand which is currently for 60 days. A number of countries are only allowed to get a visa on arrival its not because they didn't apply for a visa in their home country, these are typically 15 days. They are not all tourist visas. One is visa exempt, one is visa on arrival but for only a few countries. A tourist visa is applied for through evisa before you arrive in thailand and is a visa, the tourist visa is again for 60 days.
