An overstay isn't something you want to minimize. You'll be higher on exception reports that may not only hurt you but others in the future.

1) I would suggest 3+ months but it can vary by consulate. American account/USD is fine.

2) I would keep at least slightly more than the USD equivalent to cover exchange rate fluctuations.

3) No, not really. You just need to prove sustainability.

4) The DTV must be applied-for outside of Thailand, and you must remain in that consulate's jurisdiction until approval.
