You need the WP cancelled. At airport you may get away with it not being cancelled but borders want the cancellation papers. Ask him to write a letter then take it to WP office.

You can do a land crossing in January. 45 days which can be extended 30 days. Two crossings by land are acceptable in a calendar year.
