They changed the law in 2009 to assess each person as a resident or NON resident.....if assessed as a resident you pay tax on any working income you make anywhere in the world.
If work, live and paid in Oz as a resident you get full tax but you get a tax free threshold. If NON resident, work and paid from outside outside of the country for 180 days of the year. Then you pay no income tax and get no tax free threshold (I believe in UK you still get this) and no superannuation. All NON resident income (ie rental)originating in Oz is charged at 32.5 % from the first dollar and goes up above a certain amount.......but why would you want to pay 47% income tax if living and working outside of Australia.....Biggest thing I miss I suppose is the superannuation payments....but then when you go to use them later....they are taxed too.....I am way better off on an expat salary and tax free....I will make my own tax free retirement.
Yes but if you are a NON resident and work and get paid outside of Austalia you do not pay any work income tax at all. The taxes you pay are only on rental income that originates from inside of Australia. So you save 40 - 47% on all of your work income which, if you get paid well, outweighs the tax free threshold and Super combined.
For tax issues....Register as a NON resident with the ATO. Get a bank account outside of Oz and get your pay sent to it. Stay out of the country for 182 days a year. If you have a house in Oz, rent it out or sell it. Lodge a tax return every year. That is all I can think of...for visa....I don't know how old you are....
