Right, there is a 60 day exemption but the OP can apply for a 60 day tourist visa as an option.

Absolutely there are alternatives, and there are a number of cash only places (coffee shops, for example) here in BKK.

You have to load foreign funds, right? So someone would have to bring quite a bit of cash?

Your travel profile will definitely be of interest to many readers. While you have been many days in Thailand, you are able to prove employment and never stay the full length of your visa exemption., except the time you were sick. I suspect you will be questioned though you can prove you work offshore. I think you will be admitted, but what do I know? 55. Time will tell and your fate lies in the hand of the IO you meet.
