As you say, each to their own. I lived there 6 months in 1997 after 5 years in Bangkok, and absolutely hated it, but I have to admit swimming in the sea has little appeal to me which does not leave much else to do, Unlike Samui, Phuket's natural vegetation had been stripped for tourism and the only vegetation I recall was the rubber plantations in the island's south. But I guess if you have the money and something to do there, the story may be different.

Three months a year is a lot of time to spend paying rent in Samui and Chiang Mai at the same time.

Phuket is a horrible place to live. Expensive with unfriendly Thais and more Russians than you'd find in Moscow.

Might be a no brainer for you or people with access to endless capital, but from a long term point of view, Samui wouldn't rate a mention with me.

The important point you make is 'Go and see for yourself'. Why anyone would consider moving to another country with a child and dog without experiencing it personally is beyond comprehension.

I missed it too. If you have to think too hard, nothing is funny.

Totally agree. You'd have to have a great love of the sea to want to live there and it ain't cheap.

35% on pensions which are tax free in their country of origin! I'd be opting for Cambodia in a milli-second if that's the case. Thailand is pricing itself out of contention as a retirement destination. F**king ridiculous!

I am 70, speak some thai, and was thinking an ed visa a cheap way to stay in the country, a good way to learn to read Thai, not just speak it and also helps structure your days. I would be very disappointed if there is an age limit.
