Flying AirAsia or a similar cheap airline Chiang Mai to Bangkok. Carrying a motor bike helmet and bag that would fit into a locker. Would the bag be considered to be checked baggage with the helmet being taken as cabin baggage?

I flew with a large backpack and carrying my helmet before and didn't have any issues.
