Which is better for a family: Koh Samui or Chiang Mai in Thailand?

Hello!! My family and I are moving to Thailand. We are deciding between Koh Samui and Chiang Maing. We would probably prefer Koh Samui because of the beach, but it is more expensive and further from Laos and Cambodia, places where we would like to visit and have friends. I would like to know for a family of 3, with an 18-month-old and a big dog. What is best? Chiang Mai or Koh Samui? We want to make friends, and find like minded people!

TLDR : Answer Summary
A family is considering moving to Thailand and is debating between Koh Samui and Chiang Mai, favoring Koh Samui for its beach but concerned about costs and proximity to Laos and Cambodia. Comments highlight air pollution issues in Chiang Mai, especially during the burning season, leading to health concerns, particularly for young children. Koh Samui is suggested for better air quality and a more welcoming expat community, though it is more expensive and smaller. Alternative locations like Hua Hin, Krabi, and Ko Chang are also mentioned for their benefits, including lower costs and better living conditions.

Be aware of the worst air quality for at least 3 months a year. Not good for anybody. Think of the health of your kid!

I’m a mom of two young kids.

Our family’s priority is the health of our children.

We lived in Bangkok for 13 years and decided to move out because of the air pollution problem. We visited ChiangMai lots of times before the air pollution got worse and it’s deadly serious as it is now so I never consider taking my kids to live in the north. ❌Lots of kids in the north are having health issues because of the polluted air. 😷

Sure, people say you can go to somewhere else during the smog season but once your kids are in school it’s not easy to always have to escape.

We moved to Samui and lived there for 1.5 years , we lived in a nice pool villa with beautiful beach and sunset view, we had made friends and had wonderful time. These are the reasons we moved out of Samui;

▪️Children activities were limited once they reach primary age.

▪️Once you live there for a while you feel that there is nowhere to go and not much to do besides relaxing by the beach. Yes, we learned to scuba dive and explored the neighboring islands but we wanted to have more options.

▪️It is expensive to fly the whole family out of the island as Bangkok Airways has a complete monopoly over their services.

▪️Commuting with the ferry is exhausting when you have to do often.

Where to live depends on your lifestyle and priority in your life.

Samui is great but the weather is very hot there. Chiang Mai would be cooler at least.

1 problem with samui is that the traffic there is messy and busy (for an island) .

A lot of planes fly over samui if you go there stay far from the whole north east area.

Chiang Mai has real magic and charm and so many of us just love it here. You can walk around the old city and see so much culture and history block by block. It's more manageable and affordable than Bangkok. Great deals on condos and rentals. Great expat community. Samui is mostly a vacation island.

Chiang Mai can be nice, but they have months of burning that make the air quality horrific.

I'd agree with
@Richard ********
to consider Phuket, rather than Koh Samui. Samui is really pricey with extra cost for the airport anytime you fly in. (Edit: just read the post above about Samui resident airfares, so this argument is not valid any longer!!) The north side of Phuket is still very green, and there is a large, multicultural expat community (many of whom are long-termers).

I'd recommend taking some time to stay in each location and chat up some local expats to see which you feel most comfortable in.

Mind blowing. Especially thailand, where when the going gets tough, it can make a grown man cry. And when you hear "Ooh I don't like spicy food" !! And complaining of 'the heat' or 'the traffic'. I'm just dealing with my on/off psycho exgirlfriend, kindly cat-sitting at my villa, sending me photos of her bloodied face, where she slipped while climbing to look into the water storage tanks investigating the lack of water to the taps, landing on her face, her teeth cutting right through her lip, in the area underneath the villa that I know the snakes love, including a 3 meter python, which must've taken a few of the 8 kittens I've lost in two years, others savaged by street dogs, or at best, dying from a horrible virus. Meanwhile I've just been grilled for an hour by immigration officers on arrival at BKK about my comings and goings, where I have had to fly out/in as my previous visa expired today, and I'm yet to collect my Elite visa sticker, so had to fly to Malaysia and back so had to prove my financials, source of income, Elite membership, and justify some overstay stamps to allow me entry. My exgirlfriehd has a friend of hers coming, at midnight, to get the water running again, after spending the evening crying and tending her wounds. I'll grab a hotel in bkk and head back down to samui tomorrow. And all that just today. Today is a quiet day. A good day. I've only been gone just over 48 hours. But yeah, you bring your 18 month old baby, and your dog, the two very last things I'd want around me here, and see how you like it. Oh and my fridge has stopped working again. 🥳

Comparing Chiang Mai to Koh Samuri is like comparing chalk to cheese. Chaing Mai is the 3rd largest city in Thailand with all the facilities you would expect whilst Koh Samuri by comparison is a small island with little to offer accept a coast line. However the smoky season in Chiang Mai gets worse each year and and is enough for many, including myself, to relocate to places such as Hua Hin

My family moved to Koh Samui last, year we have small kids, a big dog and small dog.

We moved to Phang Nga recently only for the sake of staying in Thailand.

We were extremely happy on Koh samui. It is paradise.

Chiang Mai is also a wonderful place but I wouldn't want to live there during the burning season so if you plan to go there I'd also plan to leave during that time of the year.

I also want to live in Chiang Mai in the future but only briefly.

I plan to live on Samui again in the future and possibly settle there more long term.

Having a car on Koh Samui is difficult, because the roads are quite narrow. The best option is to use a motorbike...however, that's fraught with danger, as this is one of the worst countries in the world for traffic deaths.

I live on Koh Samui and I love it...it really is a tropical paradise.

Note, if you have health issues, that Chiang Mai sometimes has the worst air quality in the WORLD...farmers burning crops and so on. Do some research on this before making a decision, as it can be a real problem.

Just guessing that money isn't an issue for you as your only real option as a young family to live here is elite visas unless working here is involved, which could effect your choice anyway. Why don't you spend 6-12 months living in both before making a long term home decision? Also unless one of you is Thai, owning a home/land here is near impossible. Big step without doing a lot of homework outside of Facebook.

It probably depends on your age and your outlook ….. I’d go for Chiang Mai , a good and uncrowded international airport … good connections for Indochina and Yunnan …. The burning season might not be pretty but it’s nothing like a Delhi Nov/Dec , and worth remembering ten of millions of people dealing with smoke and dust everyday of there lives with out access to apps that just serve to make it sound worse that it is . Chiang Mai diverse … Samui one trick pony !

you are fortunate indeed that he is your former lawyer. Do you how know how many lawyers I've had dealings with? I don't know if you have been in Thailand as long as I have but if I had believed every rumour I ever heard about changing government policy that never ended up on the statute books I'd be a multi-millionaire. I'll give you an example. Many years ago when I was a marketing director for a property company I got a phone call from someone who claimed to be on the government committee that was going to change policy that would disallow foreigners from becoming directors on companies that owned land. Did it ever happen? What do you think? Apart from the fact that you are ignoring dual taxation treaties why did your lawyer pick 35% out of the hat. Why not the normal withholding tax of 15%. Beware of what Thai lawyers tell you or anyone else for that matter. Instead of spreading spurious rumours why don't you just wait and see what happens. Learn and understand.

Ignorance is not a bliss .. Verified by Thai tax accountant, a 35% tax will be levied on all foreign income If the recipient has lived within the borders of Thailand over 180 days commencing January 1, 2024. Countries with Thai tax treaties could be exempt, if income already taxed. If the recipient is listed as home country "Non- Resident" for tax purposes, he/she has to pay eventually. This applies equally to nationals and foreigners alike.

Now an Island for party peoples.

Ko Chang at this time is more beautiful with nice Islands in the near.

Samui is too small, you'll outgrow it very quickly. You'll be reliant on either flights or a ferry to travel elsewhere in Thailand, another added expense especially for a family of 3. A location on the mainland would give you more options, and you can still visit Samui if you still desire. Samui is obviously much more expensive than other potential locations.

in size or price or both.

Samui is a nice place to visit, but when living there it's very small, you drive around it in a couple of hours. A good chuck on the island is for tourists and not really suitable (imo) for living.

Totally agree. You'd have to have a great love of the sea to want to live there and it ain't cheap.

Samui is 2x Paris in size.

Prices are waaaaaay cheaper. You can still find a decent house in Samui for 10K฿. In Paris, you got an underground parking spot for that price if you are lucky 🤣.

Even if you live in Tokyo or New-York or in a small village in Issan, at the end, you stay near your accommodation / neighbourhood most of the time.

For example, Parisians don't go visit the Eiffel Tower everyday.

The only thing that embarrass me with living in Samui is not the size of the island itself, but the options to get out of the island. Flights are expensive (especially if you don't have a resident card), and in peak season, planes are fully booked. Not cool if you have an emergency.

Three months a year is a lot of time to spend paying rent in Samui and Chiang Mai at the same time.

More like 3-4 months. At best, mid-February through rainy season, usually May.

Pollution in CM has already hit 60-70.

I’m a diver so Samui is obvious for me but Chiang Mai is a bit less expensive overall. But as mentioned the smoke gets pretty bad in the north because it’s also coming from Myanmar and Laos.

Fwiw I’m in Khon Kaen and one thing I see a lot of is families and children.

Warning, keep your dog close and confined. Soi dogs run in packs and can be dangerous.

Chiang Mai has a long and pretty horrid burning season. Flights to other countries are inexpensive.

Have you visited Thailand?

on that note, when would you say the season is? I have heard different things... march to june is most common, but I hear even now it has started and low-key runs through late Dec, Jan, etc. Does this mean Bangkok would be a "no go" (for air quality, too), and is Pattaya a lot better, and on that note, in P is the SX industry right in your face at all times? It doesn't look as good as Bangkok... just like an old town. I assume the beaches on the east coast facing in are better than the beaches on the west coast facing in (and sunsets?) curious!

February to rainy season, usually mid-May. We’ve had some higher AQI already this year. I ride my scooter around the province and have found burning already.

I was here through most of March this year; I won’t do that again. I’m leaving after the flower show in February.

I haven’t been to the beaches since the tsunami. I lived on an island in a different country and developed “island fever”. Bangkok gets polluted, too. South of there you have crosswinds that help.

That's an easy one. The only thing you need to consider is your health and the health of your family. Chiang Mai has the worst air pollution in the world for multiple months every year. Just google "Chiang Mai Smoke Season"

If you don't want to deal with that, then pick Koh Samui and visit the north when it's not smoky.
