I understand that it’s a requirement. I’ve never had that much cash when I arrive and just get it from an ATM. Visited about 20 times I guess, but never been asked for proof

No. car rental companies will rent to you if you show your driver’s licence. They only request an IDP if your licence isn’t in English.

I have been asked by the airline on my last two trips (one this year) and wouldn’t have been able to board the flight if I hadn’t got an onward ticket. Immigration can ask but rarely do, whereas airlines are asking more often now.
