Actually, from what has been said by officials so far, that is exactly what it looks like the situation is.

Foreigners have until Sept 26th to either purchase an extension or leave the country.

It was stated very clearly that if you do not plan to get an extension, you do not need to visit immigration but you need to be out by Sept 26th.

I'm actually Canadian and haven't gotten any replies from my embassy yet. Was just curious what the Australian embassy has been telling people these days.

I suspect I may not get a reply until the announcement is made and the situation going forward is more clear.

if you gotta go, you gotta go.

If you can get a letter from your embassy, you may be able to get an emergency extension that way.

That was the situation before the huge crowds showed up to immigration offices and they decided to issue a free amnesty period instead.

No way to know for sure. The cabinet meets on tuesday and in the past they have made an announcement of their decision later in the day and then it was published to the gazette on the Wednesday.

other reports and statements from the ministry of foreign affairs spokesman, who has been a much more reliable source of information than immigration, have indicated that it will in fact be an extension of amnesty and will be until Sept 30th.

So we shall see.

Nothing "confirmed" until the cabinet meets on tuesday, gets approval from covid board and then publishes the final decision in the Gazette.
