Is it true that if ur wp expired it is ok until u have visa in your passport?

unless ur employer cut or cancell ur wp.

visa stay permitted : feb 23 2021

Once I have the cancellation letter from my employer with the specified date, may I go earlier than that date to the work permit office and to immigration to cancel both the permit and the visa extension?

I will be retiring from my job in Thailand in December on the day that my work permit and business visa extension of stay expire. I intend to get a retirement visa and am aware of the financial requirements. But I am getting conflicting advice on the procedure for switching to a retirement visa. Do I need to leave the country and get a non-O or can I switch to a retirement visa in Thailand?
