I will be retiring from my job in Thailand in December on the day that my work permit and business visa extension of stay expire. I intend to get a retirement visa and am aware of the financial requirements. But I am getting conflicting advice on the procedure for switching to a retirement visa. Do I need to leave the country and get a non-O or can I switch to a retirement visa in Thailand?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking clarity on whether they can switch from a business visa (Non-B) to a retirement visa (Non-O) without leaving Thailand, as they plan to retire in December. Various commenters share their experiences and advice. Most agree that it’s possible to switch visas while remaining in Thailand, provided the user fulfills the financial requirements (such as having the necessary funds in their bank account for a specified period) and follows the correct procedures, such as canceling the work permit and applying for the retirement extension at the immigration office. Some advise contacting the local immigration office 45 days before the current visa expires to confirm the process.

Thanks Stephen. It looks like I won"t have to leave the country ... but TIT.

I went to the labor office on the morning of my 50th birthday, cancelled my work permit, and then went to immigration in Khon Kaen and got an extension based on retirement. You need a bank letter (dated within 3 days in Khon Kaen), and the funds (800,000) must have been in your account for 2 months for your first extension (3 months thereafter).

Hi Peter, yes you can, I did it in the exact same way last year. I did not have to leave the country.

I usethe One Stop Service Centre. I think I will take your advice to visit them beforehand. If I leave it until after I finish, I will have a big problem if they say it can't be done.

That is correct, Tod

@Joe *****
, I could be wrong but I think the One Stop Center here in Bangkok is the only one for BOI companies, journalists, and other companies that can use them.
Joe ******
Do you know if there is a One-Stop Service Center in the south or only BKK?

Googling around it seems reports are mixed on whether it can or can't be done, although I found no recent topics about it..

What I'd suggest is about 45 days before your current extension expires, go to your immigration office and ask them if you can change the reason for your yearly extension from employment to retirement.

What immigration office do you use in Bangkok, the main one at Chaengwattana or the One Stop Service Center at Cham Churi Square? I ask that because it says you're a copy editor for the Bangkok Post.

WTF ???

@Pa**
, yep you can definitely apply for a "change of visa" going from a tourist visa to a Non-B, a Non-O or a Non-ED.

You can also apply to have a Non-Immigrant visa issued from a 30 day visa exempt entry too.

Most companies send their employees out of the country to a thai consulate to get a Non-B because it's less paperwork.

I have also heard of tourist visa's being changed to 'B' visa's at immigration.. too.. how true it is and how it may have been done. I have no idea.

Here's the engrish of the very first requirement for getting an extension of stay based on being over 50 (retirement). All it says is that you need a Non-Immigrant visa NOT a Non-Immigrant Type O. As I said, the O/P had a Non-Immigrant Type B at one time before they got their extension so that should meet the criteria.
Paul *******
I personally cant see how they will accept anyone trying to extend a 'B' visa ( working visa) based on the fact that your no longer working (retired)

I would have thought you would need to get an 'o' visa.. and you would probably need to go to another country to get it. Then extend it here at immigration

So yes do get back to us and let us know how you got on.. be interesting to know.
Tod *********
The O/P is not extending their Non-B visa (as the original visa expired when they got their extension of stay based on employment.

They are canceling that extension and applying for an extension of stay for a different reason. I couldn't see anything in the immigration rules that said it couldn't be done.

Non-Immigrant Visas have a LOT of sub categories, O, ED, B, F, etc.
Tod *********
Paul the criteria for any extension of stay is that you previously held a Non-Immigrant visa, not just a Non-Immigrant Type O.

think you are right maybe need to go out and back and then apply for o on retirement based ??

Sure

please report back and let us know if that actually worked would you?

You would be changing the reason for your extension of stay from one based on employment to one based on being over 50 (retirement). I personally have never seen it done, BUT in theory it certainly can be done. You'd need the money seasoned in your account for 60 days prior to you applying for the extension or you'd need the notary letter from your consulate stating you get the required income>

You would cancel your work permit, take the receipt of cancellation to the immigration office, cancel your extension based on employment and immediately apply for a new yearly extension based on being over 50.

Like I said, that is how it should work in theory, and there's nothing in immigration rules that say it can't be done..

@Joe *****
First you go to the Laboroffice and get the form and stamp after that go to immigration for switch to retirement visa at the same day and time if everything is okay you will get it.
Troy *********
Yep and make sure you go and cancel it yourself and get the receipt yourself as a lot of companies don't hang around for the latter.

@Joe *****
yep, unless I'm wrong you still need to go get the receipt of cancellation from the Ministry of Labor

@Tod ********
- So would I still need to cancel my WP even if it just expired?
