When does the 30-day extension take effect for a tourist visa in Thailand applied before expiration?

The 30 day extension starts the day you current visa expires. You don't have to wait until the last moment either. You can go to an immigration literally on your 2nd or 3rd day of entry and get the 30days.

We are on a DTV visa and heard horror stories about BKK. We always use Don Mueang as far more friendly and had have no problems.
