I was in the same situation, went home renewed my passport and asked for advice from my embassy. I was told to reapply for a DTV.😭 I didn't think it sounded right so ran with advice from this group, turned up with both old and new passports at BKK immigration and not a question was asked. A stamp in the new passport, 180 days in the Land of Smiles.😅

Thanks to most posters, maybe all is not lost. I was going off the info the Australian Thai Embassy emailed me, that the visa was linked to my old passport and I needed to re-apply (and pay again) for my new passport. It seemed a bit odd.
