I hear you, but would offer a word of caution. Thailand is not a 'place of paradise'. There's the scorching heat and the pollution for starters. Getting visas is hard work and getting a work visa, even harder. Do you speak Thai? Then there's the taxes - the situation is changing there all the time when it comes to farang. And there's also the numerous health considerations/costs. I love Thailand, and have spent half a year there most years for a decade, but it's not the paradise you may imagine it to be.

It isn't for me as I don't want to be in the same place for 5 months and I absolutely hate the tourist visa application - I have had it in the past but now simply can't be arsed with it.

Just get a visa exemption on arrival and extend for a while. Don't rush anything. Reappraise the situation down the line..
