TLDR : Answer Summary
The poster expresses a desire to leave the UK and find work in Thailand, highlighting qualifications as a welder, builder, and landscaper. Responses in the comments emphasize that welding and building jobs are restricted for foreigners in Thailand. Suggestions include obtaining a teaching qualification, particularly in English, as a viable path to secure work. Some commenters caution about the realities of living in Thailand versus the perception of it being a paradise, pointing out challenges such as lower salaries, cultural differences, and limited job opportunities in trades for foreigners. Additionally, there are reminders to consider other Southeast Asian countries for better options, as well as the importance of preparing financially before relocating.

Your best bet is a sales position or a remote working working job. No jobs for tradesmen as they get cheap labor in Thailand

Mate best we can do is work and holiday in Thailand unless you can teach or you want to open a buisness there’s not a lot u can do I’m sure on here we all have same dream and for me I’m up to 4 months in Thailand and 8 months working butt off in uk
Anthony *********
If you have a degree you could be an English teacher. Other than that, the Thais are very protective of their jobs (unlike the UK) so you will have to do something they can't do, hence teach English.

Wow - so many people insulting each other - shows how miserable all your lives are, that you can't simply be helpful and answer the person's question. I've been in Thailand 6 months - most ex-pats are retirees, those that work are much much poorer than they are in UK - you need to come with income. I loved 12 months in Barbados, but 6 months in Thailand is enough for me. It's cheaper, but gets tiresome very quickly - too many things aren't the paradise you strive for. It won't take long for you to forgive most of your UK negatives. Also consider Vietnam, Phillipines, Sri Lanka, Malaysia. Avoid middle east, far east, oceania. Hope that helps.

You can easily get a teaching job if you have a 4 year degree. Contact Road Experience (teachthailand.org), and they will find you some work. Just a warning: they are not very good when it comes to getting your visa docs together. Make sure you arrive here with a criminal background check from your home country, and both your degree and transcript notarized so there will be no issues.

If i was you id consider going into underwater welding and use the globe as your home instead of focusing on thailand. You can volunteer to gain experience on underwater structures and artifical coral sites and work alongside government contracts and charities using your skills

I taught for 2 years with a college degree and a TEFL certificate. I found a company here in Bangkok that paid for the TEFL and I worked for them at a discounted rate for a semester. After the first semester my salary went up to market (45,000 - seven years ago). TEFL or maybe TESOL I don't recall.

Being a foreign teacher in a government school sucks but its pay and it's kind of nice experience. After a couple of years I went back to IT work, remotely. I have managed to stay in Thailand for 9 years.

Hence, you may be able to do something similar. Once you've been here for a bit you can meet people and maybe find other employment opportunities. You would be able to be a welder, you simply couldn't compete in the local labor market, it's illegal for you to work in a position that a Thai person can fill, also they'll do it much cheaper than you will ($15/day). But your know-how and English skills gives you a unique advantage to help negotiate building contracts.. Quite possibly you could open a contracting business.
John ******
He’s not saying he has degrees in English Language or in English Lit, he is saying he has certificates for these subjects. These certs. could be GSCE in O’levels but would still be good enough to teach in Thailand but the salary would be better if they are degrees…

I have read most of the comments on here.

Thais look after themselves.ie, they will employ family before anyone else which is a good thing in my opinion.

Private teaching is the way to go but you have to speak Thai or have a translator which will cost you money.

Building /welding, forget it.

Try offshore welding, the money is very good and you can save your money. Come here for holidays and check the place out.

The UK was finished along time ago. I can understand why people want to leave, its a sh1t hole

Good luck

I have emigrated 4 times in my life. My first time was when I was 11 months old. You should never move because you can’t stand where you are. However true and justified that may be. And frankly with the UK at the moment it’s probably largely true. You should leave with the attitude that “this will be even better where I am going”. That’s my nickel on the topic as Americans would say. As for jobs. You need to work remotely And that’s not kosher most of the time. You need to seriously think about this.

Paradise?

I hope you never have to go to the hospital. This is my second time and even with the insurance guarantee letter they still wouldn’t do anything because they wanted to get more money out of me somehow even though they had a guaranteed payment, they still wanted to bring the credit card machine around and do the little thing and play wedding games while dehydrating.

This is not cheap anymore. It’s not worth it. My electric bill was as much as the United States go to someplace like Malaysia or another country where it’s actually cheap and you can get a long-term visa without having to check in every 90 days.

you don’t have a point. You like Thailand that’s fine. But what makes you think because I don’t prefer it that you’re constant messaging me is going to change my mind or is it that you have to be right on the Internet for strangers? Like what is the point?

Thailand is not at all. In fact, the foreigners have no rights. You cannot slander anybody they can sue you. There’s a lot of things about it that they’re not good. Every place has good and bad things.

Hospitals in Thailand will try to illegally hold your passport and detain you for payment even tho they are not supposed to.

They put on the websites that no matter what they will take care of you when you get there, but they won’t actually start any treatment unless you pay or have the insurance send a letter of guarantee and they will make you wait even if your suffering

I have been to the hospital twice in Thailand. The first time was really bad, the second time they made me wait but at least the bill was not a pain to deal with but in Malaysia they didn’t even ask me for any money. They just treated me and they gave me a bill at the end.

You like to lay here or whatever you do that’s great for you, but that’s not what I want to do with my life too hot for me. I get dehydrated easily and culture is not for me.

I only like Malaysia because I can go to Singapore with an hour so people have different reasons for liking what they do in life and it’s not your position to try to impose your position on everyone else because it’s like a waste of time
Bruce *********

The grass is always greener on the other side. If you've got money, it is a lot easier. If you're struggling in your home country, don't expect that to change here.

Work, save, and plan so you can come here and spend your money. These are the kind of people that Thailand is looking for on a long term basis.

Remember: Minimum wage here is under 400b a day. Many Thai live off 15k a month. They speak Thai and have a lot more job opportunities here than you will.
Kent *********
With your welding skills, if certified look for overseas work, oil rigs, oil fields, construction supervisor positions, start at the bottom in an overseas position, make good money, then go back and forth to Thailand or Philippines. Make a plan set your goals that way you are set up for the rest of your life happy and secure. Just jumping ship because you are disgusted may put you in a bad situation in life….on that note Thailand ain’t all that….(I’m not and English major)

you don't understand warefare at all. Conquering is the east part. But ruling a country that is not your own is the hard part. But well well well, now the Vietnamese are begging for our investments and welcome all Americans and out money. And look at South Korea, a very prosperous country. You are just jealous the citizens in your country still have to wait in line for break in the cold winter. It's time to realize Jimmy, that your mother Russia has lost the war.

You may discover that everyday life is far from the dreamlife many think Thailand are.

Before you change country, make a trial run with a 60 day touristvisa, and extent it with 30 days at the Immigration, since that is the type of visa most people can get without committing to much.

But STRICTLY no work on touristvisa.

Start out evaluating which visa you think you can get, by visiting the visasection of your nearest Thai Embassy website.

You won't be working thailand with those qualifications welders builders and most other blue collar workers are a dime a dozen in thailand you will staying in UK enjoy
Nongnuch ********
"a qualified welder builder landscaper" . . . . . you can't get a work permit for any of these jobs in Thailand. You could invest a capital of 2 million Baht, open a company, employ 4 Thais, and supervise them (you are NOT allowed to lay your hands on anything!)
Thomas *******
What is your basis for deciding Thailand is a place of paradise? Was it a 2 week holiday without inhibitions or cares of the world? If so, you might want to rethink your choices. Under 50? You have limited options. Over 50, hope you have some money to put away either here or at home because if not it doesn't get any easier.
Phil ********
Your English grammar is terrible. My 7 year old can write a sentence better than you.

Do you know what Capitals are?

Like UK?

Do you know what a question mark is, like this. ?

Do you know what a full stop is, like this? .

Every city, country has it own positives and negatives; Thailand is not an exception.

Supporting the above poster regarding the “paradise “ I am a Thai; living in The USA most of my adult life, returned to Thailand for 7 years and now I recently relocated back to The USA.

Luckily I am single, dual citizenship and earning my own income I can go back and forth as I wish.

Go to Cambodia as a teacher
Tracey ***********
@Henriette ********
out of curiosity, why Cambodia. I’ve been advised to do this, but not sure why Cambodia gets recommendations for teaching. I was in Cambodia last Christmas, on my first night, 2 boys on a bike snatched my bag - literally had grabbed hold of it. Luckily, my grip was tighter than theirs and I pulled it out his grasp. This shook me up, however I did continue to enjoy the rest of my visit
Sean *********
@Henriette ********
yes. Cambodia much easier to teach and no hassle long-term visas.

My grand daughter had a course in S A and another in Cambodia and now busy with degree ,she teaches Enlish there to little ones

I hear you, but would offer a word of caution. Thailand is not a 'place of paradise'. There's the scorching heat and the pollution for starters. Getting visas is hard work and getting a work visa, even harder. Do you speak Thai? Then there's the taxes - the situation is changing there all the time when it comes to farang. And there's also the numerous health considerations/costs. I love Thailand, and have spent half a year there most years for a decade, but it's not the paradise you may imagine it to be.
Joseph ***********
@Sophie ********
compared to the UK it absolutely IS a paradise
Sophie *********
@Joseph **********
The UK is a shit show at the moment but it still has a lot to commend it if one is British. And so I'll continue to spend many months of each year here.

Be aware that the website has nothing at all to do with a official Thai Embassy, but is a privat business trying to fool / scam people to believe they are a governmental institution.

So you may need to check informations from that source, with more reliable sources.

Get your TESOL and get a job as a teacher, very easy and fun! It’s a solid choice. You won’t be allowed to do landscaping, welding or building as these are forbidden to foreigners. Also, be aware that Thailand can be very challenging if you don’t have work, and work is not always easy here. You usually make less than most western jobs and there aren’t as many worker protections. It’s worth it, I think, but it’s not always roses. Be aware and be sure to budget accordingly.

@Chana *******
Hi, do you know if there is an age limit when looking for positions?
Jim ********
@Chana *******
Fun? 😂😂😂. I guess it depends on your interpretation of "fun"! Working five days a week from 8 till 4.30 for the worst pay in Thailand isn't my idea of fun!
ธารา ********
@Jim *******
I think you should have a teacher heart and the student’s needs in mind. I personally love teaching, it’s not easy but there are many other kinds of jobs in Thailand that Thai people do for much less. The fact is that Thai people already have most of his skill set so his best bet is to lightheartedly pursue teaching. It’s a sure bet with lots of freedom. There aren’t many options for someone with his skill set.
