Generally they are valid for 3-6 months depending on the companies requirements.

I have flown in to Thailand (from China) three times since Oct and the only thing I've been asked for is prove of a return or onward flight when checking in.

Yes you can, I've done this on a couple of occasions, and then when I got a new job and WP I got a new one year O visa.

and another friend left the school, went back to the phillipines to have her baby, came back 6 months later then came back (to the same school, and got a fine because her previous visa/extension wasn't cancelled

all I know is I couldn't get a new visa because of this and was threatened with a 20,000 baht fine unless my school sorted it.

If your visa wasn't cancelled , even AFTER its expiry date you will be fined 20,000 but not blacklisted
