I've done the run to Burma many times. It's easy it's a good day out and never any probs ..apart from the v.i.p bus does go fast ...

Like you said leave at 5 am back by 6 pm ..I really enjoyed this run ..I'd say just do it ..

Will a 3-day overstay in Thailand cause issues for my next visit?

No not at all I had a problem with flights at one time and missed it I was ok if I got on flight but by the time I got one I was 3 days over stay I told them at airport and went to immigration at airport it was just a fine and no problems with coming back .no black marks at all ..so you will be ok
