I have friends that do 6 months in their home country and 6 months in Thailand. It works for them. But in reading your post, the biggest issue is staying in Thailand with no insurance. This is a terrible plan. If something happens, hospital bills could wipe out all of the family's money. I see it happen more than you would think.

If the money runs out, I've heard they will put the patient under "minimal care".

Just interjecting here. My husband and I deposit well over 65k per month in a Thai bank, so we tried the 65k per month proof of income. But one month, the date of deposit was different. One other month, a LARGER deposit was made than before. The officer we were dealing with said NO. Not the same. You have to leave the country!

He ended up offering for us to be "special case" for 50,000 baht. We left and went down another path.

I've been through this with my Mom. Medical visas are short term. Retirement visa is the only way.
