You always apply for a Tourist Visa before entering Thailand but on a US [passport you get a 60 day Visa Exempt entry

@Kenny ****
All wrong, Visa Exempt entry is 60 days and the 180 day rule is made up and does not appear in Thai law

@Marianne *******
You'll get differences of opinion because different Immigration Offices have different requirements. There is not one answer for all.
Graham ******
Is this your first Extension of Stay and have you asked your local Immigration Office what they will accept?
Graham ******
@Gerald *******
What I'm telling you is not to wait until 15-Jul for your next Extension of Stay application
Graham ******
That is not a Visa but your new application for an Extension of Stay can be submitted at least 30 days before 15-Jul.

@Gerald *******
OK so you are not renewing anything, you are applying for a new Extension of Stay based on retirement (by meeting the financial requirements) which can be done up to 30 days (or 45 days) before your current stamp expires. Do not wait until the last day as your original post suggests you will do.
Graham ******
Don't do your Visa (I assume you mean Extension of Stay) "renewal" on the last day, it can be done up to at least 30 days in advance (45 in some places).

This is why terminology is important to get the correct answer. It is not pedantic to correct people as others read the advice given to the original question asked.
