Some immigration officers are trying to enforce a limit of 90 days of total Visa Exemption in a 6 month period. But this may just be an excuse to pull you aside for a chat when you do back to back Visa Exemptions too many time with no days in between exits and new entries.. Especially if you do not have a return / outgoing ticket when going through immigration.

not everyone gets stopped, taken out of the queue, has to speak with multiple officers and gets told no entry...

Initially, yes. But we had a good conversation and they let me in after I showed proof of income and me purchasing my ticket back home while I was there.

They told me to come back with a proper visa next time.

As a UK citizen you are given a Visa Exemption on arrival.

Not to be confused with a Visa on Arrival. 🙂

I did this a couple of times earlier this year and got stopped by immigration at Suvarnabhumi.

I recommend a visa appropriate to the time you plan on spending in Thailand.
