Your entry is always at the discretion of the IO regardless of the visa you hold

It sounds like you have a history that raises questions

Best way to deal with that would have been to stay away from Thailand for a while

Second best way is to smile at the IO, answer their questions honestly and pray

Other words, it's about you, not the dtv

So show your "semi-retired" income.

Unless "semi-retired" is code for "unemployed" you should have no problem demonstrating you have enough money coming in from whatever sources to support yourself in the coming years

Thailand has a retirement visa. But if you're semi-retired that means you should have no problem showing that you have enough income and/or assets to support yourself for the duration of the visa

you can read here that more DTV holders are being questioned upon arrival

The fact immigration was never a fan of the DTV and MFA pushed it through without much buy in has been talked about since it was launched

because it's a visa with 5 year validity and they know that you're probably not going to attend cooking school for years while unemployed

wishful thinking.

Lots of information online about the history. MFA apparently did an end run to launch the DTV. Immigration doesn't like it.

sure it can. It's Thailand. They can come up with a reason if they want to. And they don't have to tell you why.

the visa can be revoked at any time for any reason. So if you used false documents to get a visa, it is your problem if and when they discover it.

Also, for things like soft power, it's possible someone really enrolled in a program but did so without the intention of participating. So they can easily ask for verification of participation

Anonymous participant you can't work locally but the DTV explicitly permits non-Thai income and let's be realistic: Thailand doesn't believe that most applicants are going to be capable of supporting themselves for up to 5 years with 0 income while taking cooking classes or doing Muy Thai.
