Sharing a recent border bounce experience, via the Wang Prachang border.
When exiting Thailand, the immigration officer asked me two questions:
• Are you planning to return immediately?
• Do you already have a visa?
I answered yes to both.
I was then asked to speak with another officer, who explained that there is a “new policy” in place. According to her, if you exit Thailand and re-enter immediately, you now need to pay 2,000 THB (cash only) in order to be allowed to do so.
I was honestly caught off guard and asked for more details. The explanation remained vague — I was told it was coming from the Malaysian side, but no clear or official justification was provided.
Eventually, I paid the fee (no receipt provided). The officer gave me a plastic card with a number to give to the Malaysian IO, stamped my exit, and I proceeded to the Malaysian immigration checkpoint.
On the Malaysian side, everything was extremely smooth:
No questions, I handed off passeport and the plastic card, just a stamp and a friendly “see you soon”.
Interestingly, when I showed the number I had been given, the Malaysian officer immediately understood the situation — without me needing to explain anything. It clearly seems like a well-established and coordinated process for people who are only crossing to stamp, not actually entering Malaysia.
My personal interpretation (this is only my opinion):
This practice may have been introduced after the recent restrictions on visa runs (didn’t exist before as I crossed many times there with an other type of visa). Since border traffic has dropped significantly, this “fee” could be a way to compensate for lost revenue, even though it does not appear to be an officially published rule.
Worth noting:
The border was completely empty. In the past, even though Wang Prachang was always a relatively quiet checkpoint, there were usually at least a few people doing visa runs. This time — nobody.
Just sharing this experience so others are aware and not caught by surprise.
I just returned from a trip from Bangkok, this time I entered the country by land (from Cambodia with a cambodian passport) to visit some friends. As I remember from my previous trips I had a 14 days visa, but this time I’m a bit confused as of the stamps on my passport. Is it a mistake from the immigration officer ? Because the date mentioned on the stamp doesn’t make sense (18/03 till 16/05).
Planning a trip to Cambodia. Want to also visit BuriRam and Surin in Thailand. No matter how I plan, it seems like I need to enter either Thailand or Cambodia two times. With Visa on Arrival is there any issue with me entering Thailand, then going to Cambodia, then re-entering Thailand? Planning a three week trip and flying in/out of BKK. Other option is to fly in/out of Phnom Pehn. I think the tourist visas for both countries offer single entry. Any thoughts? Not interested in paying hundreds to get a business visa.
Greetings from USA… Doing a SEA trip hopefully by end of March and having some visa questions… Plan is to do the PI for 28 days then to Thailand on the 30 day visa and get 30 day extension. Then want to head into Laos / Cambodia for several weeks or a month then back into Thailand for another 30 + 30… Is this allowed? Because I am trying to remain fluid with my schedule not really wanting to do the tourist visa. Legitimate educated advice please…
Hello Guys. Have to do a visa run to Mae Sai soon for a 30 day visa. single entry type visa. What is the process there. Do I have to stay out of the country for a few hours. Or can I come straigh back in. Anything to lookout for. the price is 1900baht I take it. Any info would be greatly apreiated. thanks
Just got news of the border checkpoint Sa Kaeo. The person left was thinking to come directly back for a new Visa Exempt Entry. He get stopped, Immigration in Cambodia enfored their rule that you have to stay minimum 1 night inside Cambodia before you can travel back into Thailand.
Update: it seems like next week the situation could change again, hopefuly back to normality, with the only restriction (stamp refused) to people with 30 days visa exempt + 30 days extension + 7 DAYS EXTRA EXTENSION.
