What are the entry rules for Thailand when crossing from Laos, especially regarding visas?

Just came back from Laos land border a few days ago (2nd time this calendar year). As always, very nice police at this border crossing. He said this is your 2nd time, you will need a visa next time if your cross again. I confirmed (for the xxxth time) that arrivals via any airport are unlimited however. And I again mentioned my story to them (4th time?) that I was threatened with expulsion during last fall at Don Muang airport... for no reason other than apparently coming to Thailand often (their accusation of working illegally fell thru after they saw my money and business/bank records) and had to buy airport police a package of chocolate and buy an outgoing ticket to Vietnam while they watched... to see what they'd say and again (4th time?) the border police were shocked by this story. So I conclude that the Laos border police are some of the most "honest" ones doing their job and following the rules... I have never witnessed any corruption or rudeness at this border... but now it's time to figure out what's next, esp. with Coronavirus changing the rules and options we have practically on a daily basis... 🙄🤷‍♀ī¸

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user shares their experience crossing the border from Laos to Thailand, noting that they were informed they would need a visa for future crossings after using their two visa-exempt entries. They recount a past encounter at Don Muang Airport where they faced expulsion for allegedly overstaying, which raised concerns about how often can one visit Thailand without facing scrutiny. The conversation includes comments on the necessity of obtaining a tourist visa instead of relying on visa exemptions, and the rules varying by nationality regarding entry permissions.

I have had few problems and always travel with visa.

Visa, visa exempt, visa on arrival -- all have different rules depending on nationality.

technically it's only one tourist visa per calendar year, or you have to renew your passeport, but not in Thailand, so it can be a problem. I know it's a hassle and it's not gonna get any better unless they need us for their economy is some ways. Well, they have the right to deny our enty when they judge we've been staying too long in the kingdom with tourist visa or ed visa, etc.

the border crossing person was just doing his job pointing out that you foolishly burned the TWO 30 day visa exempt entries you get by land in a calendar year already. That means you're done getting 30 day visa exempt entries by land until 1 Jan 2021.

There's no need to point out to anyone that there is no official limit on 30 day visa exempt entries by air (especially someone at a land crossing seeing as they could care less about your knowledge of visa exempt entry rules :O

And while you're technically right there is no limit on 30 day visa exempt entries believe me it's only a matter of time before you're pulled aside, questioned on your entry history and/or denied entry.

Still Good luck in your travels (y) try a REAL tourist visa next time ;)

Usually I agree with you, but in this case you weren't there and I don't think the police was being snarky trying to say I was being foolish lol, just he was reminding me that next time I need a visa very politely. Why is it foolish to burn two in a row as opposed to burn one, get a visa, then burn another? It's the same amount of days you get anyways? You can still cross the land border again if you get a Thai visa at Embassy. Also they certainly did care about the visa exempt rules as they were happy to chat about it, idk what your point is there. Lastly, I do understand its a matter of time, as my OP post states they already harassed me last time in... will try a real tourist visa next time at the Thai embassy, or if airplanes still exist maybe I will fly out and try to fly in to Surat Thani...
