We are a married couple in our mid 50's and hoping to retire/move to Thailand in a few years. Would it be a good idea to open a SCB bank account now and start depositing money or just save in the UK banks until we are ready?

UPDATE: I went back with my old passport as well as my new one and was able to change the name and passport number on my account.

Thanks all for the advice!

Will turn off comments but leave the post in case anyone else finds themself in the same situation 😊

———————————

I need to change my name on my SCB bank account, after taking my husbands surname when we married. I have been to 2 different SCB banks and both told me I need a document that shows/verifies my name change. The second bank told me that I can get this from the British Embassy. I’ve emailed the Embassy and they say they don’t provide that, but that they can provide a certified copy of my passport.

So has anybody done this successfully and can shed some light?

The documents I took to the bank were

-passport

-Thai marriage certificate

-Kor Ror

I have a non O dependent visa and will apply for a long stay (retirement) extension in Phuket shortly. I have the required 800k that I haven’t touched for years sitting in a e-passbook fixed deposit with SCB. I get online statements and there is no ’book’ to update… it stays in the same account and rolls over when it becomes due.

My question is this. Has anyone used this kind of account at Phuket immigration for their 800k? Will they accept official stamped SCB bank printouts to show the continuity of the deposit, without a book because this account doesn’t have one?

TIA

Just tried to open a Savings account with debit card at Bangkok Bank, Hua Hin. I’m on a Retirement Visa and was told upfront 5900 baht insurance 😳 (non negotiable) plus the usual card fee 400 baht and annual fees. I insisted I didn’t want insurance but no way out of it. No thank you! I’m off to Bangkok next week so will try there or maybe just try another bank. Does anyone have any recent positive experiences and with whom and where?

Can anyone explain to me the poof of income letter from my bank confirming income of over 65k per month from foreign transfer.

I have had the most frustrating morning, firstly I went to the Bangkok Bank branch in Central Festival. Yes can do letter, sign some forms and come back in 90 mins, pay 100 baht. Half hour later I get a phone call, no cannot do letter, must go to branch where account was opened. Ok no real problem, off to Pattaya Klang.

Now the fun begins only one teller at the counter and took over an hour to sort this simple task, by now the queue was out the door behind me, people were clearly angry. After all this I’m still left without the letter and told to come back tomorrow. She said must pay 600 baht, I couldn’t understand for what🤔All I want is a print out of 12 transfers and the letter confirming it’s my account and costs 100 baht right?? Is this not a common request at banks?

Just a great Thank You to CM Immigration. Renewing my retirement extension. Into Bank at Sankamphaeng at 8.40, have letter by 8.50, arrive at CM Immigration 9.30. not busy, maybe 30-40 people at most. Helpful volunteers outside to check the paperwork, Inside, checked again, called immediately to a counter , processed and out by 10.10. Just to add, I changed banks about 5 months ago from Bangkok to SCB as getting a 1 year letter from Bangkok Bank takes a week and of course is out of date. SCB printed it off there and then, but it wasn't for the complete year. I had got a bank letter when I closed the BKK account. Immgration were willing to accept just the SCB letter which covered 5 months, but were very happy to take the older BKK letter too. So, if changing banks, be sure to get a final letter (not statement) from the bank as the account is closed.

Problems certifying money came from overseas.

Today applied for 12 month extension of stay based on marriage. Now on 90 day visa to visit Thai family, got back from UK September, quarantine etc. Many years have used embassy letter to show UK income enough, last year used SCB 12 month statement and letter, backed up by my UK bank account statement and 12 months of Transferwise statements. Well over 40 K every month,

Problem this year is officer will only look at SCB official statement, want statement from SCB for 12 months certifying that at least 40K came from overseas bank to SCB account. I have used Transferwise for many years. My money goes to Transferwise UK account and Transferwise is sending to Kasikorn bank who forward to my SCB account, so SCB cannot see money from abroad and so will not certify. Went from immigration to SCB direct. So now stuck. Immigration officer said busy this week, come early on Monday for queue and bring SCB certification which I cannot get. So what do I do.

Thinking of writing it all down, from my pension income to my UK bank, Uk bank to Transferwise, Transferwise to SCB via Kasikorn, each transaction with monthly and year totals. maybe translate to Thai??

Also they insisted on all 12 months, which is not a problem for me, but coming in on new 90 day, I thought 2 months would be enough

At CW doing extension. A quick word of warning. If you are a SCB customer the CW branch has closed, you now have to take a motorbike to local branch near Big C. B40
