Why didn't I receive a bank passbook when I opened my SCB account?

I opened my SCB bank account today but unlike Kasikorn bank , SCB has not given me. Bank passbook. They said all my banking has to be done by my passport. Is this a normal policy with SCB ? Maybe an account thing ? It's a savings account with them. Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster notes that upon opening a savings account with Siam Commercial Bank (SCB), they were informed that all banking transactions would have to be done using their passport and that they would not be issued a passbook. Several commenters weigh in with their experiences, noting variations in SCB's policies, including the existence of an E-Passbook account that does not provide a physical passbook but allows online access through the bank's app. Some users mention the trend of using mobile banking over physical passbooks, while others assert the importance of having a passbook for banking purposes, especially for immigration requirements. Overall, it appears that SCB's procedures may have changed recently, leading to the current lack of a passbook for certain account types.

Crikey all the posts I read on FB about not being able to open bank accounts by foreigners and here there are dozens commenting with bank accounts with different banks. Hmm๐Ÿค”

Maybe most of them already long time residents. I opened a Kasikorn account 14 years ago, even on visa exempt entry of 30 days. No app then, only cyberbanking (via internet browser). About 9 years ago, I also could open a Bangkokbank account. Then it was not a very big problem. Only walk to a couple of branches. But indeed, now I read it's becoming much more difficult. Sometimes even with a long time visa with certificate of residence.

SCB new product. Got mine upon the recent trip about 3 weeks ago. Finally, Iโ€™ve been asking for it. Every thing is on-line with monthly sms messages for bank statements. Coming from The USA where we do not know of the passbook this feel at home. ๐Ÿฅฐ

If you need this account for visa extension, you may need bankbook copies to do that.

I have a scb easy account but still get a passbook with your details and account number - I used the account for my 400k visa money and immigration asked this year for the passbook

Thailand sure loves to play fine-tuning games with banking policy and practices.

But then, that's actually a trademark part of their approach to overall governing as well - lots of minor fiddling with the rules; announcement of new policies, but changes withdrawn at the last minute.

It's one thing I really dislike about Thailand. Too much fiddling and tinkering.

Disagree? Remind me. . .how many coups in the last 30 years or so?

I have an online passbook. I can view it and update it apparently through the banking app. That's what the message sent to me said.

A bank app you don't know how to register to? ๐Ÿ˜ I guess you have to visit your branch and they'll do it for you.

I would NOT do what you said earlier. Use the SCB account for immigration and KBank for daily expenses as long as you got a K Debit Card, (it's a Visa/ATM card). And download KBanks bank app.

other way around. SCB for bills. Kasikorn will be my main bank for immigration. I know I will get the statement letter from Kasikorn for immigration requirements

You don't need a physical pass book for immigration, you just need a bank statement and bank letter. Your SCB account is more of a let's call it a "beginners/easy to use"- account, and you can get the bank statement and the bank letter from your branch when it's time for the 1 year extension. KBanks account together with a K Debit Card and the bank app is imo a notch better.

I have SCB as well and they just update to an E Passbook so I donโ€™t need to have the passbook with me all the time. You can go inside the SCB Easy app in the account section to see if it an E Passbook saving or not.

When I opened mine they gave me something that looks like a passbook but it isn't. It's just a printed piece of paper with the account name and number etc. It is because it's an app account. I wouldn't worry about it but you should have received at least something to prove you have the account with them...if nothing go back and ask questions.

SCB has central customer service number where they also speak English maybe just give them a call 02-777-7777

I bank with SCB and have a book, that I never update, so could be a new policy

You should be set then. Immigration was my biggest concern from your post but if you have another bank account with passbook, you're good to go.

Never heard of that one. I have 2 accounts with SCB, both savings A/C and physical passbooks that I update monthly via ATM. Iโ€™ve had my accounts for a few years so it might be that they changed their products.

A Quick Look at their website mentions E-Passbook account - clearly states they donโ€™t issue physical passbooks with this account type. Is that what you have?

Newly opened bank account with Thai Krung Bank, came with a passbook, ATM card.

To test it, another branch, deposited just 100 THB and passbook print machine came out with those humble 100THB in my saldo, a new line, showing the total in my account.
