TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the possibility of opening a Thai bank account with a DTV Visa. Several commenters provide insights, mentioning that while some banks like SCB may allow it, requirements can vary. It is crucial to have a Thai SIM card linked to your passport. Also, waiting for at least three months in Thailand may facilitate the process. The necessity of having a residence certificate is highlighted, although its value can vary based on the immigration office. Banks are cautious and prioritize clients with stable residency and income.

SCB, but you will need to register for a Thai sim card in your name which has your passport linked to it.

Also once you have a Thai bank account it's much easier to get tickets for places cheaper. For example not pay tourist price but local price.

I have managed this at a few places by showing my DTV along with my Bank Book/Card

Wait 3 months at least, then it will be much easier to get a Thai bankaccount.

Reconsider if a Thai bankaccount is need-to-have or nice-to-have.

Banks in Thailand are like everywhere in the world, interested in having good stable custormers, that have a permanent address, a steady easy traceable income, and use the account all year round.

That is why the banks are reluctant to give accounts to people on short time ( read: tourist ) visas, and who only spend part of the year in Thailand.

Don’t expect to get a residence certificat, until you have stayed at a permanent adress in at least 3 month, since that is what the residence certificat should confirm.

Furthermore the added attention on whitewashing of money, is an added burden on the banks, so even depositing large amounts isn’t a guaranteed way to open an account.

The value of a resident certificat, had gone down, since Immigration Officers are giving them to people that are not on a longterm visa, or have stayed severel months at 1 adress in Thailand, so even if it is a formal requirement, the bank make up their own assesment of the stability of the want-to-be customer.

Residence Certificate issue depends in the immigration office you are dealing with. Bangkok yes you need 3 months. Jomtien you do not need to wait. As with many things in Thailand "It depends". Giving definitive statements often trips you up.

Since some Immigration has issued Residence Certificats before to tourists on short time visa, it has lost it value, and now the Banks make their own valuation if the customer can be seen as resident, leading to the many denials of foreigners to open a bankaccount, also influenced by stricter governmental Requirements.

Can you share me which SCB branch allow you to open account with DTV?

There’s no connection between DVT and getting a Thai bank account.

disagree as two banks I went to confirmed they are now allowing a bank account based on having DTV. One couldn't help as they didn't receive instructions yet at that branch and the member of staff didn't know how to do it.

The other opened me an account with no issue.
