TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquires about the necessity of having a Thai phone number for their SCB bank account after their original number became inactive. The consensus from comments indicates that a verified Thai SIM card, linked to their passport and matching their account name, is mandatory for using the banking app. Several commenters suggest that acquiring a Thai SIM is inexpensive and worth the minor expense to avoid potential banking issues.

Need a sim registed with your passport. The hassle you incur is because many scammers has countless sim cards unregistered….that has changed. Small expense to keep an active sim card as little as 12b per month if you use the little machines outside 7-11s. Cheaper than a Singha

if he only needs it for a bank account there's no need for an expensive package like that. Can buy a 50 baht sim card in
****
, and then just top up 10-20 baht every month to keep it alive. In fact you can just top up 10 baht 12 times in a row in those small yellow top up machines, and for each 10 baht you extend the sim expiration date by 1 month, up to a year in advance at a time.

he said he is using his Australian phone. My phone for Australia Optus plan is 1,000 THB per month and 100 Baht when I use International roaming for the day.

Overall any Thai SIM or plan is cheaper than Australia.

absolutely, as I said, buy a 50 baht Thai sim card in any
****
and top up minimum 10 baht each month to keep it alive. Can even top up several times in a row to "buy time" up to a year in advance. Yes that is the cheapest option to have a Thai number, if you don't need data plans etc, snd yes, it will work in an Australian phone unless that specific phone is locked to a carrier from Australia.

you can have the sim card in a cupboard at home, while topping it up. As long as the sim is still "alive" (not expired)

of course not, if it is a physical sim card, but you only have room for one in your phone, then you just switch as needed. It doesn't need to be in the phone for you to top up, or for it to stay active.

You might be able to have a visa debit card for ATM , for anything else like online or app you will need a Thai phone number with proof from the telephone company that it’s your number

You’ll need a Thai number registered to your passport to continue using your account via the app.

true. Think of the past time when we did not have any app or Smartphone. Some people never had own phone too. I had also no phone for long time just because I have my home phone enough and dont want to be disturbed by many callings. Some people want to turn off and can live well without phone/ It is stupid now, because bank made app and forced us to use it. and buy a smartphone to use this?? Why? Some people do not need apps. They like more digital way to banking like before.
