What are the best options for opening a bank account in Chiang Rai as a Non-B visa holder?

✨ Updated with outcome in comments 23 July ✨

I'm on a Non B and need to get another bank account. My partner and I got our visas with a joint account back in early 2023, but I'd like to get my own account.

I bank with Bangkok Bank but they're really bad at opening a new account! They take weeks to confirm it's open, and months to sort internet banking out.

I've been waiting weeks for them to confirm it's open and know the internet banking side is going to make me want to stick a thousand forks in my eyes, so want to look at other options.

Does anyone have an easier bank they can recommend? I'm in Chiang Rai.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is encountering difficulties opening a separate bank account at Bangkok Bank despite already having an account there. They express frustration over the lengthy process and poor service at the Central Chiang Rai branch. In response, other users share their varied experiences with different banks, suggesting alternatives like SCB and Kasikorn Bank, and highlight inconsistencies in service quality between branches. Ultimately, the user successfully opens an account at Kasikorn Bank with minimal hassle and shares their experience to help others in similar situations.

I just wanted to update what happened when I went to Bangkok Bank today in Chiang Rai (Big C Branch). I took my lease agreement for our property, my current bank book - (with them, just in a joint name), my passport, my work permit.

They asked for my driver's licence. I gave them my NZ licence. They wanted a Thai one. I told them I don't have one. They said they couldn't open the account.

So I went to SCB - queues out the door and down the hall.

Kasikorn (next door) empty but for one person. They served me immediately. Got an account, an ATM card, internet banking loaded onto my phone & prompt pay. All working perfectly.

The whole process took about an hour. No worries. πŸŽ‰

It seems Bangkok Bank branches are different. Just a few weeks before my partner got an individual account with Central Chiang Rai branch without a driver's licence. Go figure!

Just wanted to provide an update in case anyone searches this group and needs to know what they can do. Thanks everyone for your advice. I am finally sorted !!!

Great to hear. I'll be there in October with a 90 day OA visa. Will be renting a place and looking to open a bank account.

It seems to be very inconsistent. Happy to hear KrungThai got you sorted though. That's awesome πŸŽ‰.

Just try different banks and branches to see what they can offer you.

Immigration as far as I know doesn't want joint accounts, so suprising you haven't already had issues

No, no issues so far. Immigration know us well. No problems. Just a major problem getting an individual account. πŸ™ˆ I've got lots of good advice now so have a way forward.

I bank with Bangkok Bank and haven't had any problems. I did have to buy an 8000 baht insurance policy. The internet banking seems to be working without issue. Maybe you are unlucky with the branch?

I used to bank with KTB, I would avoid them. The last I knew they shutdown the web portal so you can only use the phone app.

We started with a joint acct at BKK bank an absolute β€˜ mare to deal with , especially for retirement visa PPWK - we moved to individual accounts at SCB and a real pleasure to work with them, got an Easi Pass account that pays 2.5% if you keep the 800k here…..

@Michael ******
thanks for that. I haven't had time to go to a branch yet, but maybe I will try SCB instead. I have all the paperwork. I just want someone who will make my life easier! Appreciate that tip.
Michael *******
their internet banking is easy as well , although at the moment only on one app, so we keep on our phones….

@Michael ******
that's ok. I only use my phone for Bangkok Banking to check my balance, pay people and scan to pay. I very rarely use the website so SCB could work well.

Ok thanks for sharing your experience. I do think it's just the branch. I will try another one this week and see if I can get better service. It really shouldn't take months.

I tried to get an account in 2002 with bangkok back in mukdahan, they wanted a 40k tb insurance policy or wouldn't do it, ended up with ttb, will try and open again with bangkok bank, not sure if that was just that one branch I had the problem with, or the agent....

@Wayne *****
I am doing it directly with the bank. I know there are restrictions on some things. Foreigner accounts can't access certain bank priviledges. We just tried to take cash out of the money machine without a card, the scan wouldn't work. Things like that can be a pain, but to buy using Scan To Pay works just fine.

@Colleen ******
things have probably changed since I tried with bangkok bank, but 40k was completely out of line

Yes that does seem a bit odd. What kind of visa were you on?

Ok. That should be no problem at all. These banks can be quite difficult at times.

I suspect you did not open it at Central Chiang Rai branch then. Because if you did, you'd be waiting a long time ...
Sashy ********
And what kind of documents you had to fill? I have never filled any, just handed over my passport and work permit and they gave me the form to sign.. that's it.
Colleen *******

@Sashy *******
Lucky you. We had to sign all the account forms - there's at least 8 signatures required. It's ridiculous.

Is your bank Bangkok Bank? I already have an account with them. I'm not a stranger. I have all the necessary paperwork, long term Non B, accommodation lease agreement, other forms of ID, proof of address, utility bills ... I have it all. They just seem to have trouble opening a separate account for myself and my partner. I know it sounds ridiculous, because it is.
Sashy ********
If you are on Non-B then there shouldn't be any problem in opening a bank account, and it will hardly take an hour...

Bangkok Bank opened my account in 1.5 hours.

Thanks. In Chiang Rai? I filled in the paperwork three weeks ago. Still waiting ... I know if I go back to follow up they'll be going down the long winded path of "oh we can't find it in the system, let's do it again!" 25 signatures later.... I really don't want to do that again.

Does sound a little absurd.. I'm wondering if your partner went with you to open the new account or not.. since her absence could have led to some of these problems materialising.. in contrast to your experience Bangkok bank opened my account on the spot.. and my internet banking was activated before i left the branch.. and i walked out with my atm/debit card.. everything done and dusted in one visit.. so can only deduce your problems are due to the staff at this particular branch.. as mentioned elsewhere it's clearly not a widespread issue with BB.. I'd try another branch of BB myself.. which has to be easier than going to a new bank altogether.. given you are already an account holder.

Thank you - yes I agree, that's why I am asking which branch people have gone to. Honestly, it's such a ridiculous waste of time. There is nothing complicated about this request. They know us, they've seen our transactions for over a year. We're very active customers. I just want my own account. I have all the paperwork. It just seems near impossible .... and utterly ridiculous. I am dealing with Bangkok Bank in Central Chiang Rai. Maybe I just go to one in the city instead and try my luck there.

In answer to your other question, I went with my partner to open his separate account. We had all the appropriate paperwork. He filled in everything as requested. They said it was fine and would confirm in a week. But the following week went by and nothing ... so he went back in to follow up. Had to apply again ... waited another week, and nothing ... went back in ... then he finally got the blue bank account book but had to press on for internet banking ... this process of following them up repeatedly went on near three months ... Clearly we're working with the wrong branch.
Jim ******
Try Kasikorn Bank.

thank you. Banks seem to be different in the various cities. You're not in Chiang Rai are you by chance?

no problem at all with a work permit, just ask for the branch manager. And tell him your company needs to send salary on Thai bank account

@Radost *************************
thanks for the tip. We pay staff weekly on our joint bank account, they can see all the transactions so that shouldn't be a problem. They have my work permit already, I have it with me for every visit. I'll ask to see the branch manager next time I go in. I do think another branch might be a good move too given what others are saying.

now back in the UK. I banked with them in Chiang Rai. It was easy to open an account at the time.

Ok thanks. How long ago was that please? In Jan last year it was super simple. Now, it's ridiculous. My partner just got a separate account. It took him over 2 months and many many visits to the branch to get them to finish the job. He had to re-do the paperwork THREE times during that time.
Jim ******
@Colleen ******
mine was 3 years ago but if you have an O A visa it should still be simple. All the branches seem to do their own thing. Depends on who you see when you go into the branch. Go in, be polite and respectful.

Ok that was a while ago now. Things have changed even in the last year. I'm always super polite, patient and kind. This is just getting ridiculous.

I'd be inclined to open a multi currency account with Wise!

I have a Wise account too. But not good to pay Thai staff with that account. We also have trades people come to the house to fix things from time to time. I like to pay them on the day with PromptPay. Need a Thai account for that unfortunately.

@Colleen ******
Understood. You really should be able to open a Thai bank account. I had an account with Bangkok Bank also. I got to know the manager and some of the staff quite well. Shame I'm not there now.

I know ... and I agree. It just seems that with Bangkok Bank Central, it's become quite the nightmare. They seem to turn over the staff at that branch. The people haven't been the same lately. That might have something to do with it. Personally I love the banking app and everything I can do with my account. It's just opening a new one seems to be quite difficult. Hope you get to come back to Thailand soon.

I know it is more difficult now. I'd just keep trying different banks until one accepts you. Siam Commercial

Thank you. I am with Bangkok Bank at Central Chiang Rai. I have options now after speaking to others here. I appreciate your feedback. Heck, I could spend a whole day and just apply with all the banks that will talk to me and see how I go. πŸ˜†πŸ™ˆ Seriously though, I'm sure I'll sort it sometime soon.

@Phil *****
I don't believe we've met. I have banked with Bangkok Bank since Jan 2023. It's a joint account with my partner. I simply want one of my own. I've already said I have a Non B visa and have a work permit. There is no secret story. Which branch do you go to in order open these 4 accounts?
Phil ******
@Colleen ******
firstly 4 accounts? Thought your opening just 1 other account? Ask the bank you are banking with at this moment. Is this a communication problem?
Jared *********
@Phil *****
the communication issue appears to be with your misunderstanding. The "4 accounts" comment is asking YOU where YOU were able to opened the 4 accounts. The OP only wants to open one new account for himself and trying to find options on where that is easily accomplished and asking since you were able to open 4...

I think I'll end this conversation. You said you had 4 accounts. I've always stated I just want one. This is wasting time.
