The individual encountered problems with banks, particularly SCB, which did not recognize the O-A visa as a valid retirement status. The comments provided various suggestions, including trying different banks and branches, obtaining a residence certificate from immigration, and the importance of bringing cash or a Thai partner for assistance. Keep searching. K bank and Bangkok Bank seem to be the most accepting, from when I did my research.

When I did mine (Bangkok Bank), I just took my Thai gf, about $500 USD to deposit, and my passport. They checked my passport to see how often I actually travel to Thailand, since I didn't have an address other than my gf's.

The only other thing they wanted was a foreign account from where most of the funds would come from

Always ask for the manager, when a peon says no. Work your way to the top. When they say no to me, I tell them that NO is not what I do. And since you continue to say only NO, find me someone who can help me. Preferably YOUR boss.

Unfortunately, no is part of the underling culture here. Do not accept it. Give them a very, very hard time. Do not be nice, once you start getting the No, No, No. I really make them suffer. I do not let it go.

I cause embarrassment, grief, suffering, agony, regret and misery. I heap it out. And it not only works, but it might make them slightly less arrogant, next time.

yep, very easy, get the place you stay to register you and then go to immigration office to get a residency paper - with that paper and passport go to BB branch in Karon and ask to open a savings account. They will try sell you insurance but you say you don't need it. That's all. Let me know :)

I read all the answers with interest since your situation illuminates a glaring gap in the Thai "retirement" visa process. The bank is following the law, they are NOT permitted to open an account unless you have the visa. The fact that you need the account to get that visa is not their prob -its the govt's.. whiich means 'its our problem"! Youtube has vids of lawyers talking about it. According to my research, your other comments are right: keep going from branch to branch.

Bangkok banks in Bangkok. You need a "proof of address", the easiest is to get that from your embassy. They also require that your passport is certified by the embassy.

You'll get full account, ATM card w visa debit built in. Done in 1h. Internet banking etc.

I tried other banks and branches and they were all impossible in silom/Sathorn area.

Banks in malls may be closed as of today....

Not an expert here but have been investigating this visa as I’m also looking to stay long term in the near future.

My understanding is that the ‘initial’ OA visa is a multiple entry long stay visa. After ‘one year’ you apply for an ‘extension’ based on ‘retirement’. Could that be the issue??

Happy to be corrected if wrong as this information will be of help to me in due course.

Yes, Kasikorn usually insists on a "retirement visa", but they seem to have a binder for staff with examples of what falls under that category - including the OA that the OP has (since it doesn't have the word "RETIREMENT" stamped on it the way an extension does).

the doc needed from immigration is a residence cert. Bangkok immigration won't do this until after a 90 day report, if in Bangkok need to get from your embassy instead. Other immigration offices may do it.
