Hi guys,

I'm hoping I can get some insight on what I can do in relation to overstaying my 60 day visa by 1 day; leave on the 61st day at 2pm.

Is there something I can do at customs when I arrive in Chiang Mai?

Your advice is welcomed

TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation focuses on the issue of overstaying a 60-day visa in Thailand by one day. Participants clarify that customs deals with items brought into or out of the country, while immigration handles visa permissions. They suggest options like paying a 500 baht per day fine for overstaying or obtaining a visa extension from an immigration office, which costs 1900 baht. Some advise to be cautious as overstaying might complicate future returns to Thailand, while others mention that the risk of being penalized may not be significant if the person is leaving the country soon. The best practices outlined emphasize either timely departure or obtaining an extension to avoid any oversights.

I overstayed last October one day. No problems at immigration and no fine.

@Tom ****
so did you go to immigration and explain our did you explain at the airport?

Is it possible for me to talk to the person at the airport who stamps my visa on arrival... do you know?

I'm happy to pay the fine I just don't want to waste a day at immigration...I was hoping to do it at the airport when i arrive, but it seems I can't.

An annoying miscalculation for 1 day. Thanks

@Marie ************
it's not the fine !

It's being stopped for any reason and going to immigration prison .

And having a overstay stamp in your passport screams to every immigration officer in the future,in any country,that you are a rule breaker .

It's plain stupid

Customs has nothing to do with overstay.

Happened to me, just wasn’t paying attention to travel dates as I pass over the international date line. They pulled me aside to a desk, agent looked at my visa stamped “exempt” and gave it back to me without even looking up. Was beneath his notice
Paul **********
Go through immigration before midnight. Job done no fine.
Robert *********
@Paul *********
you can go through untill you check in with airline
Bo ********
@Paul *********
could be a long sit on a chair in the airport, but actually solid advice if someone is indeed that worried about it
Leo *******
Some of these comments are garbage.

Just get an extension or change departure day.

Or follow the garbage advice and risk an overstay mark in your passport.

@Leo *********
well said
Lion *****************************
Go to your local Immigration office and ask them what you should do.. within 7 days of the expiry date of your Permission to Stay stamp.
Lion *****************************
sorry within the 7 days "before" expiry date.
Ian *********
pay the 1 day overstay 500bht is best option . and cheapest ,
Nate ******
I overstayed 5 days. Paid fine . Have been visiting Thailand since then 3 times and extending . No issues.
Lynnette *******
@Nate *****
no issues because you weren't caught, didn't get arrested. The fact you got away with it is no reason to tell someone else they will too.
Kim *********
@Lynnette ******
since he was fined he was indeed "caught"
Lynnette *******
@Kim ********
being caught is when you're stopped by the police before reaching the airport and end up in a cell because you're already on overstay. He didn't get "caught', he was leaving and ready to catch his flight so no reason for immigration to detain him.
Nate ******
@Lynnette ******
you are extrapolating.
Bo ********
@Nate *****
haha these people make me laugh so hard
Robert *********
Jeff ********
just change your date of departure to a day earlier. Not that hard.
Lee ********
Just go airport day of your 60 day stamp
Baz *********
@Lee *******
How does he get to the immigration area without a boarding pass the day before he Flys?
Steven *******
@Lee *******
and get stamped out.
Robert *********
Never overstay !!!!
Andrew *********
@Robert ********
why ? i have many times once was for over 6 years never had any issues
Robert *********
@Andrew ********
well ,if you get stopped and checked ,it's off to immigration prison .

You won't like it much .

Just because you did not have an issue does not mean people will not .

For me dealing with the visas is much easier than

The possible consequences .
Andrew *********
@Robert ********
Dont get stopped would be the answer but yes i agree prevention is better than cure but it really is not such a big problem as people are making out . A few dollars can sort most things out .
Robert *********
@Andrew ********
a person I knew spent 2 months in immigration prison .

He would fully disagree with you .

Cool you pulled it off .....not for me
Chang ******
Customs and immigration are not same
Graham ******
An overstay is taking a very big risk and should be avoided
Frank *********
Of course no one wants an overstay stamp

But 1 overstay of 1-7 days is not the end of the world and
****
time will never hamper any return visits…

With that being said obviously is always best to avoid the “Red” stamp
Lynnette *******
Get the extension. So simple. Well worth the peace of mind too. . What if flight was delayed or cancelled on the day and you're on overstay already.
Christopher ***********
@Lynnette ******
Good thinking! I too would go with this. I’m assuming the OP has counted day of arrival as day one? If do nothing the 500 baht per day overstay fine is normally waived for the first day. However, passport would still be stamped in red as ‘overstay’.
Lynnette *******
@Christopher **********
there's so many unknown if you want to chance it. Missed flight, cancelled flight, illness on day of travel, then it's a bit late to sort out all for the sake of getting the extension. 🤷
Moses *********
Get to the airport early enough to be stamped out on 60th day?
Baz *********
@Moses ********
Not possible

You cannot get to departure area to see the immigration officers until you have a boarding pass..

You cannot check in at the airline earlier than the day of your flight when check in opens to get a boarding pass anyway.
Moses *********
@Baz ********
Good point

Thanks
John **********
Be careful with overstay of even one day. If you happen to have reason for the police to check your passport and you are on overstay you will be arrested and possibly deported. If you make it to the airport you'll be fine
Andrew *********
@John *********
i overstayed many times and once for over 6 years and went back within 2 months and no problems .Never ever have i had any issues and i have lived there for over 22 years before .But i agree you must be carefull and dont get stopped or it pay time .
John **********
@Andrew ********
that must have been a very long time ago. It's certainly not the situation now
Andrew *********
@John *********
true it was back in 2014 the last time . I think they change the laws after that
**
500 baht for over stay per day but it looks bad next time you come into Thailand to have an overstay stamp. I’d pay the 1900 for extension
Andrew *********
@**
nonsense i overstayed 6 years and went back within 2 months and no problems
**
@Andrew ********
okay. This is my personal experience. For my last 4 trips in the past two years
Andrew *********
@**
i think the laws have changed and are a bit harder now i must admit . But as always if you got money every thing is possible.
David *******
Just report yourself at immigration and they take you to a desk and you pay a fine. 500 bht per day I think.

Or do the 1900 renewal.
Martin ********
@David ******
yep 500/day. By misunderstending rules I had two days overstay ... 1000 thb. Had no influence on my return after a short stay in Kuala Lumpur
Jan ******************
Just stay low until you’ll get to the airport where you’ll get pulled aside in the immigration and told to get a proper visa or extension according to your preferred stay in Thailand next time. You’ll not be fined and probably not an overstay stamp either.
Brandon ************
First of all, customs has nothing to do with any of this. Customs is about what you are bringing into or taking out of a country.

Immigration and passport control are the ones who have to do with your permission to stay in a country. You cannot do anything at the airport, there is no immigration office at the airport. You can go to the immigration office and apply for a 30-day extension when you have 30 days or less left. It will cost you 1900 baht and a bunch of paperwork.
Roger ********
@Brandon ***********
What paperwork is required for 30 day extension please ?Thanks in advance.
Ralph *******
@Roger *******
One form to fill in. Then your passport and passport photos. Perhaps a TM30.
