What are the implications of overstaying a visa exemption in Thailand, and how can I avoid future issues?

Hey, quick question about over stay. If I leave a day after my visa exemption expires, will I just need to pay the 500 baht fine? Will it create any more serious problems than that, especially the next time I try to enter Thailand?

My visa exemption stamp is until the 13th of January, and my flight is at 00:30 on the 15th (so I'd pass through immigration on the 14th).

Thanks in advance!!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquires about the consequences of overstaying a visa exemption in Thailand, specifically if leaving a day after the visa expires will result only in a 500 baht fine and whether it would affect future entry into Thailand. Several commenters share their experiences, indicating that minor overstays (like 1-2 days) typically result in a fine without long-term consequences. However, they advise caution, as overstaying can sometimes lead to questioning by immigration upon re-entry. Some recommend paying the fine at the airport rather than seeking extensions at immigration, while others note that experiences may vary based on specific circumstances and location.

I over stayed for a week just paid at immigration it was cheaper but I was in a hospital bed so no chance of getting pulled by the cops

No problem getting back into the country on next visit

Noga, my 6-month visa expired January 9 and I flew out of Suvarnabhumi January 10. I got the triangle stamp in less than a minute without having to pay 500 baht as I had expected. GL.

That's exactly what they did to me Wednesday afternoon.

, my comment was for Noga's initial post. But I was asked for my passport on a city train in Bangkok once and I've had to show my driver's license at a police check stop on my scooter. Everyone should carry a laminated copy of the passport credentials including the Thai visa. Apart from common sense safety reasons, if you ride a scooter without wearing a helmet you're asking to be stopped and fined one or two thousand baht.

Thanks for the tip, I think I will go get a laminated copy of it to carry about so.

Daytime. Both times late morning - sort of the post-brunch hour. Never seen it before either. I have lived in Chiang Mai almost 15 years.

Thanks for the update
@Mar***
, new to me for sure. This was during the day or at night?
Marike **************
Yes. Have been stopped twice in Old City Chiang Mai in recent weeks. On foot. Always carry my passport. Not a problem.

Police stopped you as a pedestrian
@Mic****
?

It's a personal decision for sure but for what it is worth I do not carry my passport anywhere and have not been stopped or asked for it either in many years in Thailand (and a decade in Asia). Outside of ONE time when I was cycling past a nuclear facility in Iran. That is the only time I've been asked in MY LIFE for my passport by police. I have never seen a street blockade stop anyone who isn't on motorized transport (I ride a bike, they just wave me through 100% of the time). So YMMV and it depends on your appetite for risk but I would personally just live on the edge for that <48 hour period rather than going queuing in immigration. But I gave that option if she wants to be 100% safe. I would I think avoid going clubbing in those last 48 hours, that is the circumstance you are most likely to be picked up as a pedestrian. You were young and foolish once yourself Marike when you overstayed for 5 hours :)

She's fine at some borders and only i she doesn't get caught. Chiang Mai currently having occasional street blockades and asking to see passports of everyone including pedestrians. It's an automatic ban if they catch you first.

Marike I believe whether you get charged for under 24 hours depends on the border, the land borders do, I think CNX airport does as well but BKK doesn't. I have also been charged 500B for under 24 hours. Noga you should be fine yes just pay 1,000 and don't get picked up the police in those 2 days. If you want absolute peace of mind you can go get an extension at immigration for 1,900B but I think I would just pay the 1,000 at the airport. Show up a bit early so you have time, it doesn't take long.

Hey guys, thanks for your help, I just realized my flight is on the 16th, so it would be 2 days over stay... still just paying the fine? (I dont mind paying the fine, I just dont want issues coming back into Thailand next time).

@Mar***
, yep they were talkin' to you because you were doing too many visa exempt entries in a row (in their minds), :)
Martin **********
@Tod ********
it was a time when they were trying to enforce 2x30 day tourist visa per year. Alot of us oil and gas workers 4 on 4 off having issues back then. Think they used the overstay to check my story out
Tod *********
@Mar***
, you didn't get pulled out of line for that overstay stamp, believe me ;)

What do you mean you got pulled in the airport? what happened?
Martin **********
I went to immigration in Pattaya to do extention of 2 days. They told me there id be cheaper to pay overstay at airport which i did. A few months later returning back i got pulled in airport as had overstay stamp.
Marike **************
Not necessarily. I have been fined for 5 HOURS overstay.

Many many years ago.i was 1 day overstay had to pay fine.ive heard since they waive one day overstay.but this is thailand.
Jamie *********
I cant say categorically buy from past experience wont be a problem..just pay the fine
Tod *********
you will get a stamp that says "overstay of less than 24 hour fine waived" and that's it.

It will not cause you any problems in the future.

The stamp looks like this usually (its the one in thai stamped diagonally) .
