What should I do if I overstay my visa in Thailand by one day?

Hello I made the stupid mistake of not double checking my visa stamp when i recrossed over into Thailand by land through Cambodia (I have already did a 30 day visa extension in Thailand prior to this) and booked my flight for August 24th, the day after my visa expires on August 23rd. I have tried contacting the airline to change the date but they are all booked up for the next couple weeks. I know it’s only 1 day of over staying but I’m freaking out because i love Thailand and do not want to have any issues if/when I decide to come back in the future. Has anyone recently overstayed and what was your experience? I’ve also already did two land crossings into Thailand during my 6 months of travel in SEA on top of a 30 day visa extension. I appreciate all the feed back.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user has expressed concern about an imminent one-day overstay due to a flight booking that falls on the expiration date of their visa. They have asked for advice about the consequences of this situation. Comments suggest that typically, for a one-day overstay, a fine of 500 THB can be expected, but it is generally not considered a serious issue, especially if one voluntarily departs. Many users shared their personal experiences with minor overstays, indicating that at immigration, it is often acceptable to pay the fine and apologize. However, it is advised to avoid overstays whenever possible to prevent any negative impact on future visits.

One day isn't a problem. Pay 500 baht. It happened to me a few years ago. I booked the slow boat tour from Chiang Mai but i forget this is the tour which stops at the Thai side for one day... So we crossed the border the next day when my visa had already expired just one day. I apologize and explained what happened. I get the overstay stamp in my passport. And 10 days later I came back into Thailand without a problem and no problem since even I visited Thailand 7 or 8 times in the past 5 years.

I know one thing on this site time to get off people asking for advice and may get wrong advice from certain people not checking passports then wondering why they have an overstay and to conclude Thai government is making significant changes in October regarding visa so make sure you know what you want before coming on this site...

@Gary ******
who said ' Significant ' changes !

@Gary ******
where can we get full details of all the changes being made on Oct. We have tried thai embassy in london but response time isn’t great from that office . Thanks
Gary *******
All I know if you apply on or around September 15th a person/persons should be ok
Colin *********
Gary Payer that date you mention is only in regards to the Elite Visas and even then, even a/the top legal firm in Thailand, Siam Legal, don't know what changes will be made to that. Everything is only rumours right now. Oh and there's also August 15 mentioned in regards to current Elite Visa holders. As for any other Visas, no information has been released and everything is rumours

If you’re flight is at 0100-0400 hours you can make it through immigration prior to midnight which makes it within the timeframe…if not it’s a ฿500 fine

I realised I would be on 1 day overstay pre covid, I went to Jomtien immigration to get an extension but they actually turned me away and said it wasn't a problem.

Immigration at suvarnabhumi noticed it but never issued a 500b fine. They put a small notification in my passport stating no fine as I was voluntary leaving a day late.

There's been no repercussions since.

very helpful! Thanks for sharing your experience

What time of day is your flight?

I fly out at 1pm

Ah ok. That doesn't work then. If you had an early morning flight as long as you cleared immigration before midnight it doesn't actually matter what time you physically leave the country. But yeah, won't work for you. At the airport there's no fine for one day overstay, but you do get a small "overstay fine waived" stamp. It's not a full-blown OVERSTAY stamp, and it won't affect any subsequent visits. However, the general feeling in this group is never overstay, so perhaps better to get the extension

your initial explanation is a very good one. But suggestion of extention is not. They may or may not ask for the 500THB fine. As said offer humble apologies and pay the fine.
Steve ********
@Edna ******
Best to avoid the stamp in the passport. There's no fine at the airport for one day overstay. Humble apologies make zero difference

Where are you flying to?

If it is close by and inexpensive just book another flight the correct day.

Or postpone the flight and fly out to a different country close by and the return to Thailand.

@Cliff ********
these days the airlines charge heavy fees to change anything. No easy way. For one day, they won’t eat you. Offer apologies in the Thai manner and pay the 500THB required per day overstay.

I’m flying back home to LA. If I was able to afford postponing my flight I definitely would but unfortunately I can’t at the moment🥲 thank you for the advice though. I really appreciate it😊

Don’t worry, u can extend your visa for 7 days in imitation office, 1900 thb.
Lauren ******************
1 day? 500 THB fine only
Edna *******
@Lauren *****************
offer apologies and pay the fine. It’s not uncommon that people make mistakes. Any longer overstays can be a problem, like a week or more. Also changing your flight, even if available can cost you a very heavy fee. Even with a flexible ticket.

@Lauren *****************
is not good to have even 1 day of overstay.
Todd *********
@Наталья **********
it’s not problem
Edna *******
@Наталья **********
yes, but one day shows good intentions and not an on purpose act. When overstays are longer, yes it can possibly prevent you from entering Thailand for a long time if ever, depends on the abuse.

Even if Immigration denied your application for an extension (eg if you already had on extension) they would give you a stamp giving you 7 days to leave the counrty.

@Eve***
don't just wait and see, and don't wait for a one day overstay. Listen to Paul's suggestion, this shows you are owning up to your problem and have good intentions. Wishing you safe travels.

You can get a 30 day extension on each visa exempt entry. It's not limited to one time per year, it's limited to one time per entry.
Jamie ********
@Brandon ***********
do you know if you can extend an extension? 😬
Brandon ************
@Jamie *******
only if you have Thai family.
