anyone have any experience with overstaying on the 30 day "visa-exemption stamp"? trying to book a flight 3-4 days after im suppose to be out so i'm wondering if it makes more sense to go to immigration and extend, or just pay a fee at the airport

TLDR : Answer Summary
Navigating an overstayed 30-day visa exemption stamp in Thailand can be straightforward. If you find yourself overstaying by just a few days, your options include paying a fine of approximately 500 THB per day at the airport, or opting to extend your visa at immigration for about 1900-2500 THB for a 30-day extension. Many expats report that minor overstays usually result in minimal consequences, although it's always best to address the situation prior to leaving. Extending your stay might save you the hassle of potential issues at customs, especially if you're subjected to a routine ID check.

It is very common that tourists overstay for a day. Mostly because people think 1 month equals 31 days.

If it's just a day you overstayed it's mostly down to the custom officer in front of you. They are more lenient at the international airports then the land borders If it's more than that, you pay. Simple.

The red stamp you get just says you paid your overstay fine. Absolute no problems. I got several of them.

Well the overstay will cost about the same as an extension and would avoid the inconvenience of going to immigration.

But on the rare chance you are caught on overstay...

You could get a 30 day extension at 1900 thb or pay the overstay fee @ 500 thb which for such a short period will not affect future travel as some have posted.

Experience or not it's always better to act within side the rules, it may not affect future visas/ entries now but it may well do so in the future.

Not mine personally either, but sadly I have heard different from others.

That's not my experience

An overstay is an overstay and should always be avoided out of respect for the visa. Yes, most of us staying here long-term have overstayed at one point in time, but any immigration officer has the power to take a dim view of that overstay and make entering the Kingdom more challenging ;-)

John Justus - Best answer so far.

No worries, Just go direct to the over payment counter and pay before you go through customs. Although it will be 500 THB per day. There are no endless lectures as Thomas Lindegaard Jensen suggests.

Easy, peasy, straight forwards.

But be aware, as somebody already mentioned, should you get in to a silly police check, you might get problems.

I'd recommend to go for an extension before you legal time runs out. Extension costs 1920 THB (+ 500 thb a day if you're already overstaying)

20 baht maybe because they make a couple of copy.

In Samui is 1,900.

- Yeah, 1900 but in Samui they like to have their "Service Charge" ;-)
Tod *********
You mean 1900baht for extensions ;)

I have overstayed - went to immigration and paid 500bht per day fine. You will get a stamp in your passport. It hasn't affected any of my travels in and out of the country

Best to go to immigration ASAP and get this sorted out.

As I understand it you'll also be at the receiving end of an endless stern lecture through which you'll have to wai and say sorry at appropriate moments. I'd extend!

never..... extension were 7 days on visa exempt, since 29 August 2014 extensions are 30days unless you are from a country which has bilateral agreement with Thailand, like Mongolia, HKG, Laos, Russia or Vietnam.
John ***********
ok but it was 5 year ago i go one...
Tod *********
there is no 2 week extension. :/

So far i did not get any problem of this even overstay one week

In theory you could indeed not extend, in which case you will pay 1500 or 2000 baht depending on 3 or 4 days overstay, however if you happen to run into a police ID check you could potentially be looking at a five year ban from entering the country if such a check takes place whilst you are on overstay.

you can just pay the daily fee but if you'd like to come back to Thailand you shouldn't do this... looks bad
