What should I do if I overstay my visa in Thailand by two days?

So…I am going to go over my visa by two days. Does anyone have experience with this? Is it a big enough deal that I should go to immigration for an extension, or just pay the fine and be on my way. (I will be flying out of Bangkok in case that’s relevant). Thanks!

TLDR : Answer Summary
If you're about to overstay your visa in Thailand by two days, it's a relatively minor issue, but it can still lead to complications. Most responses suggest that while the fine for overstaying is 500 baht per day (totaling 1,000 baht), it's wiser to avoid receiving an overstay stamp in your passport, as this could create problems for future travels. If your flight is close to midnight, you may potentially argue that it's only a one-day overstay and possibly have the fine waived. Overall, the safest advice is to visit immigration for an extension if you're concerned, especially to avoid legal troubles if stopped by authorities before reaching the airport.

Overstaying your date in your passport is breaking the law.

Many times on here people ask is it ok to overstay - 1, 2, 5 days etc. The fine at the immigration exit desk is 500 baht per day of overstay. Some immigration officers will waive the fine if it is only 1 day, but you’ll still get a red stamp in your passport.

However if you are stopped inside the country for any reason - like at a police check point - even on your way to airport or border crossing then be prepared for a whole lot of trouble.

The police may arrest you as you have broken the law. If they do you’ll be fined in court and then sent to the nearest Immigration Detention Centre, where you will be kept until you buy a one way ticket back to your home country. If you don’t have the funds for that you will be kept there until you find some means of raising those funds. Once you have your ticket, you will be deported and blacklisted from entering the country for up to 5 years.

Sounds dramatic but it sometimes happens. 500 baht a day sounds cheaper than 1900 baht at a local immigration office but in the overall scheme of things it is never wise to overstay.

I already have my outbound ticket but I’ll head into immigration for the two day extension I need. Thanks!

I almost cannot believe people telling you to get an overstay stamp because it is only 1000 Baht... You DO NOT want that stamp in your passport.

That’s what I was wondering. It might cause problems in the future, right? With Thailand or other countries too?

That stamp proves that you violated the law and broke the rules of your visa. And if you do that with Thailand, why not with other countries? The only positive thing is that other countries no longer see the stamp when you get a new passport. I don't know anyone who has been refused a visa because of that stamp. But for me traveling to Thailand is important. My family lives here. I just wouldn't want any hassle and just follow the rules properly.

It is bt1900 for the extension, or bt500 a day overstay fine at the airport. If you are going to be out partying on your last few days I would get the extension, as lots of places are getting raided to after hours alcohol service, and if you happen to get caught up in one of those and are overstayed by even a day it could be trouble. If you aren't doing that kind of stuff then it is cheaper to pay the overstay fine than the extension, and it will not go against you, as long as you are flying out.

Pay the fine and get an overstayed stamp

If immigration gets you before you come into the airport bigger problem, if you reach the airport 1000 baht for both days

Did they charge you the fine?

@Karen ******
some have very early flights...1-2 am departures. So if check in and pass thru Thai immigration before midnight...one day overstay vs two and fine waived for one day overstay. But as your flight is midday...its two days overstay.

you will be fined...

Likely 1,000...

What time is your flight?

1000 baht and you will be fine.

The fine is 500 baht per day. Not a massive issue for two days generally. You’ll get an overstay stamp in your passport.

If it is only two days that would be no problem you may need to pay a small fine at the airport and sometimes they waive it if it is only one or two days.
