Looking for a bit off advice guys I arrived December 1st and 30day visa obviously takes me up to the 30th how strict would they be on it if I left 2nd 3rd January can it go against me for coming another time, other option is either get a 30 day extension but seems excessive for 2-3 days or I jump on a flight then come back again which would give me another 30days

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking advice on what to do as their 30-day visa in Thailand is about to expire. They are considering leaving the country for a few days to reset their visa but are concerned about potential repercussions for overstaying. The community strongly advises against overstaying, highlighting the risks of fines and possible bans from reentry. They suggest obtaining a 30-day extension as a safer alternative, which costs approximately 1900 baht. Users share personal experiences and opinions on overstaying and the importance of complying with immigration laws.

Many years ago I needed a 2 day extension similar to you. Went to immigration for an extra 30 days and was told no need, just overstay the 2 days.

No fine but you do get the dreaded red pen in your passport.

Of coarse all immigration offices are different so it's a roll of the dice.
Brian **********
Even a few hours is an overstay. 1900 baht buys you 30 more days!
Andre *********
If you don’t like to waste time at immigration, just go to an agent. For little money they will provide you with a 30 days extension. Before I had my NON-O visa I did it many times. My agent charged me 500 THB for this support. I handed over my passport, picture in the morning and afternoon same day I had my extension stamped. Don’t take the risk of overstay.

yea il get it done in Pattaya was mostly just a question as to wether they’re was a bit of give or take if it was only a day but seems easiest and best way is just to get the extension
Alan ******
It definitely might affect any future plan of applying for a longer term visa. Otherwise spending a few days in a Thai prison can’t be all that bad, can it?

Quit trying to game the system

David Dyeooof... he wasn't, he asked and now has an answer.

he's trying to outstay his visa. Sounds like gaming to me. He only makes it more difficult for those of us who follow the rules

@David ****
he is asking about it. He is asking. Kudos for asking.

@Diana *****
I agree. However if he checked this group he would see it has been answered many many times

this whole group should shut down then and just be a one page document on visa rules. Cos every question is asked 1000s of times.
Ricky ******
It's their country. Break the rules and suffer the consequences. Don't listen to other 'advice' on fb. If you are arrested and held in immigration prior to being deported and banned, the wi fi in the Bangkok Hilton is probably not too good if you want further advice then.
Sue **********
Just extend for the 1900 bht 🤷‍♀️. Then at the end of that, you could leave and fly back in to do the same again? Totalling 120 days 😊

think I’d be broke by the end of 120 days 😂

Cheaper most places just to go to Immigration office.

I paid 500 baht for each day I over stayed in at airport no problem I done it twice one or two days ok
Joe ******
Pay 500 baht fine for each day you stay I've done it a couple of times
Zoe ******
It might affect you from getting certain long term visas in the future.
Henrik *****
Never overstay get a visa / visa extension.
Iain *********
All the advice you have been given about getting the 30 day extension to avoid an overstay is correct.

In case you don't know the first day you arrive - even if it's after 11 pm - is day one (not day 0) so the 30 days is up on what you may otherwise count as day 29 of your holiday.
Jamie ******
Just be aware people have been arrested ,yes ARRESTED for being one day over ,, you can go get 30 day extension for 1900 baht
Ian *****
Jeez.....really you are asking is it ok to break immigration rules . Why not just follow them and avoid any issue ?
Alistair **********
@Ian ****
because this is Thailand, laws only apply if you don't have money. Overstay fine is waived if immigration is closed or if you leave only 1 day over via an airport, so there clearly are exceptions which is what the question was asking.

I read it over a couple times but still knew I was gonna get a few people that would be cocks about it
Lynnette *******
@Oliver *****
people have given you honest advice about the negatives of overstaying. Why does that mean they are being cocks about it? You can break the rules and overstay and take your chance. Or get an extension. Up to you. 🤷

@Oliver *****
it's what most people said. It's surprising you'd ask if overstaying was ok.
Alistair **********
@Oliver *****
yeah people don't realise how relaxed Thailand's overstay laws are compared to other countries. Generally immigration don't care about a short overstay, but police certainly do. It shouldn't affect you being allowed back in the future and is only 500B per day you overstay. If arrested though the penalty is much greater and you cop a 5yr ban. It's up to you if you want to take the risk, most likely place to have an interaction with cops is being pulled over at a traffic stop.

some people just like to slay people at any opportunity pretty sad isn’t it
Tony *********
But if you do overstay . Just don't get caught by police because your consequences would be a fine and a ban of up to 5 yrs . So I think a 1900baht extension pays off
Steve *******
Get the extention, you dont want to be on overstay!
Brown ********
If you go the 2nd it's 1500 baht fine. The 3rd it's 2000 baht fine. An extension is 1900 baht. Up to you really
Sue **********
@Brown *******
ah but runs the risk of being banned from coming back? No?
Brown ********
@Sue *********
doubt that will happen
Sue **********
@Brown *******
maybe your right, but there’s always the risk with that ‘one’ immigration officer 🤷‍♀️

Does getting a 30 day extension limit how many times you can come back in a year, heard someone before say something about it but they weren’t 100%
Neil ********
@Oliver *****
don’t believe so.
Todd *********
@Oliver *****
no, getting the 30 day extension is always permitted. No limits as a result.

Pay for an extension especially if you want to have another visa in the future
Martin *********
You will be fined 500 bhat per day for overstay .. it’s no problem and no issue , unfortunately years ago I did it many times , 2-3 , and a couple of times 5 days … infact once they told me I’d overstayed by 2 days , and never even fined me ! .. that all was years ago , but my understanding ( I live here now ) is that they are quite happy , as long as your not taking the pi** ..
Paul *******
@Martin ********
So, not a real problem unless found on overstay by police or immigration. Then a serious problem - detention, expulsion and ban on reentry. Never choose to overstay.
David ***********
Go and get a 30 day extension

Anecdotal comment: I had a similar situation at the end of my last trip a couple of days would've made things much more convenient for my travel but it felt like such a hassle to get an extension for three days. I posted to get a sense of how big a deal a short overstay would be. The answers were super aggressive - you would think I asked about child trafficking. I decided to just leave early. Anyway I am a effing idiot and had miscounted the days and so I thought I was leaving my last day but had actually overstayed 3 days even though I picked that date to avoid the overstay. Getting old and losing cognitive function sucks. I was horrified, but the IO insisted it would not be an issue when I returned and paying my fine was all the punishment there would be and not to worry and everything was going to be fine.

Now I haven't gotten back yet - one more week... And he wouldn't be the first Thai public servant to give me false information and I could get turned away at the desk... But he was super calm and very reassuring so... We will see what happens.
Todd *********
@Jack ***************
exactly. You pay your fine and move on. There are no repercussions. And the weirdly aggressive old boyz will keep this up regardless

@Todd ********
a couple entries ago I had a lady on a bad day. She chewed me up one side and down the other. She was preparing to turn me around when the supervisor came over to see what was wrong. She spoke a bunch of Thai- smacked me passport a couple times along with some point... The guy told her there was no problem and to let me through. After she stamped me, as I walked away, she yelled "don't stay so long next time!" It was absolutely bonkers. I am just afraid if I get some post office massacre waiting to happen officer again and I've got the black stamp it will push them over the edge. Shrug. Worst case I swim the river. :)
Todd *********
@Jack ***************
That's just immigration doing their job. I agree - shrug. I can take it
John **********
There is a fine of 500 baht for each day you are over your permission to stay, and you will get an overstay stamp in your passport. But more importantly if you are found to be on overstay other than at the airport when leaving you can be arrested, taken to the immigration detention centre and deported. It's really not worth the risk, go and get an extension.

Following the law seems excessive?

If you have any interaction with the police on even one day overstay, you'll be arrested, held in immigration detention, processed, deported and banned from Thailand for 5 years.

If you make it to the airport you'll be fined 500₿ per day for each day of overstay and receive an overstay stamp in your passport which could cause issues entering Thailand, or even other countries, in the future. Why not get the extension which will cost about the same as your fine for overstating and also avoid any potential repercussions.
Maxim ***********
@Brandon ***********
You are exagerating the risk, especially on the "could cause issues". Overstay stamps are the last thing they care about upon entering Thailand.

if you are on a 30 day entry you can go get your extension in Bangkok anytime you want. You don't have to wait until it is ready to expire.

Seems excessive to maintain a valid visa in a foreign country? 🫣
Chris *******
@Duncanc *********
i was in exactly the same position last year and opted to pay the fine at the airport because it would save the hassle of a day at immigration to get the extension.

I'm back in Thailand now but if I had that time again I'd probably get the damned extension. Every time I go near an immigration officer now I get the warning about overstaying. Nothing too dramatic, but it does have an effect on the proceedings later on. It just makes you a suspect to overstay again and it is a dark mark on your passport if you're a regular visitor.
Oliver ******

@Duncanc *********
thanks for your answer but what I meant by that was is there an allowance for you to go a couple days over and it’s ok or do you get marked down for a next time or get a fine, a helpful answer would be much appreciated
Guy ********
@Oliver *****
you will get a 500 baht fine for everyday and could be marked as overstay . Pay 1.900 baht for extension so you’ve paid 900 extra and kept a clean sheet would be my advice.
Todd *********
@Guy *******
you will definitely be marked as overstay. In Thailand, they put in the overstay stamp and amount of fine. I have a lot of them lol. From multiple countries. Just Pay your fine and move on…
Barry *******
@Oliver *****
the fine I believe is 500 baht a day when leaving but you could land in trouble if you are caught before hand.

Unlikely.

Pay for the extension and keep everything legit.
Duncanc **********
@Oliver *****
It’s definitely illegal - you will be fined a fixed amount for each day and immigration stamp your passport as an overstay. (It’s difficult to say what impact that can have in future)

The more serious risk is that you are stopped by police while overstaying your visa. You could be detained in immigration detention as an illegal immigrant.

The sensible option is to extend the visa - but as you have mentioned flying out that will also solve the issue.
