Hi there, I have a question about over running the 30 day tourist visa by a couple of days. Is it possible to just pay a fine at the airport for overrun days or will this cause a problem for me? Would another course of action be better?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster inquired about the possibility of paying a fine for exceeding the 30-day tourist visa duration. Community responses indicated that while paying a fine (500 baht per day) at the airport for a brief overstay is an option, obtaining an extension at an immigration office is highly recommended. Several commenters emphasized that extensions are typically processed within the same day, and it's safer to avoid overstaying to prevent potential complications such as a year's ban from Thailand.

You do not have to wait till the last minute to get the extension. You could have gotten it before heading to Koch Phangan (for future reference). Or you could get it anytime after. You do not lose any days by doing an extension early. Days are tacked on at the end of the period.

Thanks - good to know for future!

If your caught on overstay, the penalty is a years ban from Thailand plus held in IDC until your flight out. You need to work out the risk against getting the extension.

Yes Luke your right. I got confused with the other thread and the guy giving himself up after 95 days. 5 year ban is correct.

The penalty is a 5 year ban, if you get caught even with one day of overstay.

I would take IT more serious , as many Tourist Are Controled on the streets....if they catsh you it will be decently a big amount ! So better hurry up and jump over to Samui....

30 day visa exempt?

If so go to any immigration office and get an extension of 30 days

just keep out of trouble and keep well away from and police and you should be okay.

ok - thanks guys! I'll try and get the extension on Friday but worst case, I'll just pay this fine.

500 baht per day of overstay

Ok - just saw your reply. So the paying of fine for a couple of days is acceptable
Steven ***********
they just take you too one side and take your cash and put an overstay stamp in your passport

Do you get in trouble at the airport when leaving or do you just have to pay a fine?

Thanks. I might need to do this on Friday then. It looks simple enough.

But, if you don’t want to go to immigration then it’ll be possible to pay a fine at the airport at the immigration desk
Steven ***********
Okay, so yes, you can go to any immigration office and extend for 30 days.

In the unlikely event you get into trouble after day 30 without an extension you’ll be an illegal alien.

same day, simple. people go from koh phangan to samui every day to do this.

I got the visa exempt stamp upon arrival

Did you get a visa to visit Thailand prior to travelling? Or did you get a 30 days visa exempt stamp upon arrival?

The extension is usually done in a few hours at the immigration office. It’s not difficult.

Sorry - I'm not sure what the first question meant about "30 day visa exempt?"

A little problem is time; I am on Koh Phangan and the nearest office is Koh Samui which I head back to on Friday with my plane out on Sunday. I think Friday is the last day of my 30 day visa but it might be a bit of a push getting it done on the Friday. Do these things get processed quickly? i.e. same day. Is it really necessary to do? i.e. can I just pay a fine?
