Depends on a cost benefit analysis. How much are changing fees with tickets vs at least a day waiting at immigration, getting a residence certificates for 500 baht and the 30 day extension for 1900 baht. At a minimum, that's one day waiting in heat, IF you have all required documents and paying maybe 80 USD?

Western union from USA to Thailand is generally 6usd/200 baht to send around 60k baht.

why do tourists want bank accounts? I'll tell ya.. it's a catch 22. For the retirement visa, the thai embassy website states that 800,000 baht is needed in a THAI bank account. I am 7 years away, but want to build that nest egg as I continue working in USA. Now, to get the account, I need the visa I hand, whose perquisite is having the account, that needs a visa...
