What happens if I overstay my tourist visa in Thailand for one day?

I did one day over as I was delayed coming from the North a few years back - paid 500 at the airport and asked "any problems coming back?" they said come back tomorrow if you want 🙂 Had the same misfortune in Aus 10 years back - two year ban. P.S had no efffect on my retirement VISA approvwl a year later
