Letting your Thai wife drive is the best advice on this thread! Remember the police decide who is liable in the event of an accident. Blame doesn't come into it. As a foreigner you will be held responsible. If an injured person needs brain surgery and care for the rest of their lives the cost could wipe you out. That's where insurance comes in but can you be sure they would pay out?

Thanks for the tip Graeme. All good to know. Wondering what they would have done if you couldn't have managed to instantly rustle up two neighbours who were agreeable and had time to spare who could both find their house books and ID cards together with photocopies? I know I'd be struggling (and panicking!).

Very interesting. Most helpful, thanks Otto.

Totally agree! Never needing room heating or a hot water system is amazing too. Water, electricity and internet are all extremely reliable. I have confidence that, when the time comes, a Thai Government hospital would do their best to ensure I have a humane end. Sadly, that hasn't been my experience when relatives have died under the U.K. National Health Service.

Thai Mrs paid 60 baht to the receptionist of a local high street clinic. No questions or examination.

Did the police order the other foreigner to pay your Mrs's hospital bills and compensation? Or was he insured?

Thanks for taking the trouble to let us know Dennis. I must admit I would've assumed a re-entry permit would be the same animal wherever purchased. At least you didn't waste too much time/money on the journey.

I agree Nick. An experienced visa agent that comes with a recommendation will take all the worry off your shoulders. But, as you say, it will cost. In normal times, expect to pay 20,000 baht upwards. At this time I have read of fees of 30,000 and 40,000 baht being charged.

Assuming you don't have Internet access to your account you would have to ring them to make sure. Could try making a small transfer from your home bank account. If your Bangkok Bank account is already closed the transfer will 'bounce back'. I wouldn't worry. I have read that accounts can be flagged as 'dormant' and not actually closed. In that case you can ask them to reactivate your account next time you are in Thailand.
