 No way is that right, your English license is not valid here, only an IDP for 3 months, if stopped you will get a fine.

 I came to live here from the UK came on a tourist visa and single air fare, no one every asked for onward travel confirmation.

 You do not need onward travel ticket/document, many people come here then travel overland to say Malaysia etc.

 maybe only "loose" the money you can afford to loose ? A very good bar come restaurant near where we live has just closed, owned by a Thai lady, it's "Low" season, many foreign people come here in "High" season and think it's that busy all year round !
