 I'll head over to K-bank or whoever is open at airport plaza tomorrow to see if I can open one and report back to see if times have really changed. So much doom and 3rd hand accounts spread around

 You can, it just boils down to the bank manager of the day and the lucky dip of what documents they want. I had no issues last year on a visa exemption with Krungsri.

Bangkok outright refused, others tried the same bank and got told no.

Don't over plan it a year in advance. Live here for a few months on a tourist visa and see what happens. Very likely Bangkok will not be the ultimate place you want to live.

As stated, it's far easier for you to find a Thai Wife and remote job than to get a local job for a Thai company.

Why are so many people losing their passports?

Put them in your suitcase at the hotel. Carry a photocopy and pictures on your phone.

DO NOT CARRY YOUR PASSPORT IN PUBLIC!!!

 If the IDP document is not valid then you may have just learnt a valuable lesson.

Chiang Mai police are renowned for not having any tolerance for foreigners which in other cities you'd get away with
