Erik Despard What I'm saying is that it's not a black or white issue - border open or border closed. We need sensible immigration policy reform, and then stick to the law. We need migrants, otherwise we'd have to import all of our meat, milk, vegetables, fruit, etc from some other country. And think about who cooks and washes dishes in restaurants, and who cleans the hotel rooms.

Erik Despard That's nonsense. Immigration policy has been broken for decades, and neither party has the courage to legislate change

David Earl That's mostly true, and a good point. You'd have to look at the input voltage for each battery charger and ensure they say 110-250 volts.

Here's a few things you might not think of at first:

Get a phone with dual SIM capability. You'll need a US number to maintain the ability for 2 factor authentication when accessing bank accounts etc online. I use Tello for US sim card, as their plans are cheap and fully customizable. Choose your minutes, number of texts, and amount of data. Start around $7 per month.

Make sure you have at least one US credit card with no foreign transaction fees. Good emergency back-up source of money, and makes buying bigger ticket items like airplane tickets cheaper.

Open a Wise account. Then create a USD interest account (3% give or take) within Wise and transfer US dollars into this account. From here you will be able to transfer to your Thai bank account instantly. Note that some US banks take their sweet time to transfer the money, Wells Fargo being one, thus my use of the Wise USD interest account. I've waited as long as six days for money from WF.

Download Thai apps - Grab, Bolt, Lazada, Shoppee, etc

Research what goods are available here and at what prices. Sell or give away most of your possessions, just keeping a few special things or unavailable products to bring with. Power tools will be of no use to you due to the different voltage.

Leave your dog with the ex wife or with your buddy. Transfer of pets is complicated and expensive, and the environment here is not healthy for a pampered US animal.

Become familiar with the process for voting while overseas. It's a government program wherein US citizens who live abroad can vote in federal elections.
