In similar circumstances, I would take my Thai wife with me even if I was a fluent Thai speaker. πŸ€”

You are correct... I take the pincer stick (I use to pick up litter etc... Washed! +) wind the passenger side window down .... and always receive a smile when I offer my passport to the officer... and when the passport comes back duly updated!

I've ever had one.in 14 yrs in Phuket.... .. But we (my Thai wife and I) had to produce photos of us together in the house, and together in the front of house showing the house number on the gate. Wasn't asked to produce a witness. Different interpretation of requirements by different regions... I guess.
