every airline has this in their small print. It's a fraud prevention. But rarely actioned.

it's not 100% guaranteed, you're right, but I've never been prevented boarding with a return flight, up to 6 months after arrival. And I travel to Thailand a few times a year. Especially, if he is granted his visa.

Have you checked they haven't asked for further information for your visa application?

Having a return flight is enough. It doesn't matter when, because you can extend visa exemption for a further 30 days in Thailand

not good advice. The 7 day stamp is a " you must leave Thailand, within 7 days!" Not a stamp I would want in my passport.
